Video: PBS Bill Moyers Interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright on Barack Obama

The depth of understanding and compassion with which I see Bill Moyers address the African American experience on his show has always amazed me. I am so grateful to him for his work and for making sure that we are always humanized. Also, don’t forget to watch his interview with James Cone on the cross and the lynching tree.

After hearing those snippets taken out of context played and replayed ad nauseum, I assumed that Rev. Wright was a well-meaning asshole who was demonstrating the law of unintended results.

After watching this lengthy interview, I have come away with a totally different impression. Rev. Wright is an intelligent and learned, skilled orator. He made valid points that we all should reflect upon and if we do not, it will be at our own peril.

Those snippets, played out of context, were just as misleading as the reasons that were given to Americans for invading Iraq.

I would submit that anyone who watches this interview and continues to condemn Wright actually would prefer that the USA to be a dictatorship rather than a democracy.

As “gasdocpol” said so eloquently above, this intereview opened the eyes of those who did not have such experiences, whose worldview is somewhat removed from any group that experiences quite blatant and subtle forms of institutionalized bias (of all kinds).

For those whose eyes remain blood-shot open with with the difficult reality of all of this~and the longing for it to get real friendly with truth, education and justice, this was merely another affirmation. And in Rev. Wright’s case, vindication.

Notice I didn’t even put Sen. Obama in this…these are Rev. Wright’s words; like him [Sen. Obama],

I suspect that all of us are independent thinkers capapble of navigating our way through anything that we hear and read–whatever the source [yes, including our pastor, friends, professors, parents, news media, and the like]–filtering through what makes sense as informed by TRUTH, and how we wish to use it to make the lives of our family, friends, co-workers, students, neighbors and people we don’t even know, better.
