Michael Eric Dyson wrote the following review of Wright’s contributions in The Chicago Sun-Times in September 2001.
Last Saturday, Trinity United Church of Christ pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., turned 60. That milestone is an opportune time to reflect on the life and career of an acknowledged master of sacred speech still at his height.
In a 1993 poll conducted by Ebony magazine naming the nation’s 15 greatest black preachers, Wright was second only to legendary pulpiteer the Rev. Gardner Taylor.
Wright’s preaching genius derives from a mix of numerous strengths. He is clearly one of the most intellectually sophisticated and scholarly ministers in the land, reading widely and thinking deeply about the pressing religious and social issues that occupy his literate sermons. He possesses a musical voice whose intonations are brilliantly regulated during the course of his sermon delivery, rising and falling as emotion and circumstance dictate. His diction is flawless, his articulation precise, and his universe of linguistic reference is international given his command of several languages.
Neither is Wright afraid to resourcefully dip into the lexicon of his native black birth and shape the grammatical constructions of his people into the ethical eloquence for which our best prophets are justly celebrated. Wright moves effortlessly from the streets to the sanctuary in illustrating the social sweep of the Christian gospel. And he is unparalleled in the pulpit in framing theological reflection with the insights and nuances of black culture, the perfect embodiment of his church’s motto: Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian.Like his father and grandfather before him, the Philadelphia native entered the parish to fulfill his ministerial vocation. Wright thought that he would become a teacher, in light of his family’s strong educational foundation. His mother, Mary Henderson Wright, completed high school at 15, college at 18, and her first master’s degree by age 20, before garnering a second master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania. Wright’s credentials are also impressive, including a master’s degree from Howard University and a doctorate of ministry degree from United Theological Seminary. Wright also got a second master’s degree from the University of Chicago, where he was a highly regarded scholar in the doctoral program, working with renowned historian of religion Charles Long. But Wright felt a call to reach the black masses that would never darken the halls of ivy, and thus he relocated from the scholars den to the sanctuary.
Wright went to the pastorate of Trinity in 1972, a decade after it had been established by the denomination to address the church needs of homeowning, upwardly mobile blacks, not the city’s project dwellers on the South Side. Trinity’s membership had risen to 350, but declined to a mere 87 members, with an annual budget of $30,000, by the time Wright was called.
Wright set out to enhance the strength of a black church in this predominantly white denomination by focusing on authentically black preaching, a culturally vigorous music ministry, outreach to the black poor, and racially relevant biblical teaching.
His plan worked so spectacularly that it is now the largest church, black or white, in the entire denomination. Trinity has more than 8,000 members, 70 ministries, and an annual budget of $9 million. Wright not only ministers to his immediate congregation, but he preaches countless revivals, speaks at numerous conferences, addresses a variety of social and cultural gatherings, and lectures at universities across the nation.
Wright’s prophetic stances on social issues, for instance, his church was a leading voice in the call for the end to apartheid in South Africa is more necessary now than ever. Huge segments of the church including the black church have been seduced by the materialistic gospel of prosperity that obscures critical attention to the bread-and-butter issues that define the black church’s raison d’etre: social justice, racial equality and spiritual vitality, themes Wright has relentlessly and fearlessly embraced. May he live long to preach the gospel and uplift our people.
And here’s the audio of Jeremiah Wright’s sermon “Audacity to Hope” that inspired Barack Obama’s book.

What on earth has Obama done or said in concrete terms that has garnered such black support for his candidacy? And yet we’re off and running like wild horses without a clue. Black America, stay tuned and we’re going to get a bought lesson in the real deal. When white folk say “jump”, his response will be, “how high, Sir, i.e. boss?”

You don’t choose the Pope and the Pope is in Rome. But you do choose which church you attend. You can attend another church. Obama chose this one. Rev. Wright did not just say crazy things once, he has said them many times.
God Damn America?!?!? You can hate America but to Damn it? as a religious leader?
and to spread lies “(Obama) ain’t rich. He ain’t privileged” Really? your wife making 300k/yr and lamenting how your daughters HAVE to spend 10k/yr on piano and ballet isn’t rich? Privileged? Harvard Law grad? LIving in a $1.5million house?
“He ain’t white”? Want to ask his mother and grandparents that raised him about that?

Realitycheck……………Sean Hannity, is that you?
Guess what, I got news for you.
I don’t give a shit WHAT his pastor says.
Fact is, Barack Obama is more “Patriotic” than any of the other candidates because he isn’t fucking stealing and lying to the American People like McCain and Clinton.
Boy, the McCarthyism is rampant the last three days.
What, I have to get my Pastor ok’d by you?
How’s this for Patriotism?
Fuck You.

After hearing Dr. Wright’s sermon tiitled “The Audacity to Hope” I can now understand why Barack Obama was led to become a memeber of this church. I would encourage others to hear more of Dr Wright’s sermons (even the questionable ones) in their full entirety and not just the 15 or 30 second sound bytes the media is having a feild day spinning to assassinate Dr. Wright’s character and cast Barack Obama in an unfavorable light. I would also encourage Obama not to distance himself too far away from his spiritual advisor. At the level your heading to, you need a shepherd now more than ever before. I’m going to pray that these full sermons be heard in their entirety so that the general public will come to understand the plight of the poor and the oppressed who still remain with us in the 21st century.

Just my thoughts and observations on this latest “scandal”:
1) Someone in the Clinton campaign is working VERY HARD to find dirt on Obama, and only coming up with lint. I can only guess the mantra over there must be “A voter a day keeps Obama at bay”.
2) I think we’re beginning to see that not even Jesus Christ could run for President of the United States in 2008.

Bill Kristol’s New York Times column about Barack Obama this morning contains a major, prejudicial error — quotes right-wing propaganda site Newsmax that falsely claims Obama was in church during an anti-american screed.

hey greg, exactly. Jesus Christ himself could not run for President these days. Wait til they hear about that “running angrily through the temple turning over tables” episode. He would have been “Howard Deaned.” LOL.
hey donna, that’s crazy. i saw that the obama campaign nipped it in the bud quickly.

i think we need to stay focus on the big picture, and remember as well as the clintons, the big corporations that are used to doing business as usual in washington (lobbyists…etc) will do anything for Brack not to make the nomination. divide and conquer is the only way they know how to play. please lets not fall for the okey doke!

I am supportively following the issue, with Rev. Wright, and regret that the campaign is taking all types of negative hits from this. It is evident that the media (sean hannity and fox news) have deliberately tried to tank your chances. It is important to understand that anything greatly achieved in this country or this world for that matter was not done without some level of scrutiny. No achievement accomplished without steping out on faith and knowing that as long as your mind, heart, and soul is in the necessary and proper place that the truth would shine through.
This is a spiritual time for this country. It is not ironic that these tapes surface. It is not ironic that you have the blessed honor of being the deliverer of a message long over due. It is not ironic that you are the derivative of two entities that have been WARING with each other for 389 years til this day. It is time for an awakening if we plan to get this country on track, because GOD knows that we need it. The time has come and you are the recipient of something so devine in nature that the evil forces couldn’t began to comprehend that their intentions would be used for the greater good of this nation and “SEAL THE VICTORY” in the name of the people. God Is good and necessary in the attempt to walk our destined path. You have always wondered where is your place? What you were put here to do? Well my brother you have reached that precipice.
Rev. Wright was essential in your journey in life. We need to stand firm on that position and if you can explain to the people (not the media) you will maintain the support of the people. It is tragic that we have been living in a country that has been fill with social injustices most of which still exist today. This is where pastor Wright is coming from. He is from a period where Blacks were beaten, raped, misused, misunderstood, and treated less than human beings and he is a gentlemen who served his country honorably. How many of our soldiers are being treated this way today. We cannot begin to change this world until we change our country. We cannot change our country until we change our minds excepting our faults in this world and then we can start to heal. And in this campaign it starts with you.
Rev. Wright gave you the “Audacity Of Hope” and look where you are now. Your father along with your mother and all the ancestors before them gave you this dream. And your wife and little ones along with your supporters are going to get you to the white house.
“America is weeping and she has been throughout history. She weeps for the Native Americans, She weeps for the Spainiards, She weeps for the Early Settlers, And She (America) is weeping for the long time abuse and mistreatment of African Americans and all immagrants who are here in this country. There is a history of pain and open wounds, there is too much bloodshed and it is time to heal. Together we can heal/Together we can change!!!!”
I hope you get this before tomorrow and I hope this help give clearity on the issue we are facing if you believe we will get pass this.
Your brother

It’s unbelievable how so many people are so influenced by sound bites and media spin. It’s a darn same that people can’t think for themselves and can quickly judge a 30 second sound bite without bothering to read the full speech or get more context.
To my GOP followers – it’s complete hypocrisy at its worst. The Catholic Church has for decades covered up child rape by hundreds of priests around the country (and world), they have a history that is a rather mixed bag. Jerry Falwell, Pat Roberson (ALL CONSERVATIVE PREACHERS have said some stunningly inappropriate and very offensive stuff that seems not to offend Sean Hannity and the hypocrites in the Republican party and religious groups.
WHITE PEOPLE can’t fully begin to appreciate the experiences of not being white in America, especially in the up through the 60’s.
EDUCATE YOURSELF, INFORM YOURSELF ON THE FULL MEANING AND CONTEXT – before casting judgment and making stupid statements. This was such an unfair, uninformed SMEAR against both OBAMA (who didn’t say these words) nd even Rev Wright. SHAME ON US FOR BEING SO CONTROLLED BY SPIN AND SOUND BITES. Know wonder America is struggling these days.

Stop Hating! Where Obama goes to church should be none of our concern- as non partisan non religious election—- lets get the job done and stop whining…..OBAMA will be our next President- he’s got my vote! My pastor is Rev Michael Beckwith and he has never said anything I do not like but I have been other places and I still go- I like to hear all sides of a story— and what pastor Wright said was TRUE- Hillary has never been called a N–gg–r… so stop tripping! The day he calls her the white devil maybe then you can have a problem but the truth is the truth it’s hurts but it’s true

I think that this just shows that litmus test politics are as strong as ever. Furthermore, it shows that when one cannot triumph on the issues, they must resort to such tactics.
It manifest itself in the following: rather than discuss political oppression, archaic economic system, the highest literacy rate in the western hemisphere and Universal health care, folks would rather just ask you if you are for or against Fidel Castro.
If we are as evolved as we criticize other societys for falling short of, then we should be able to discuss issues in their totality of context.
Perhaps we are not what we say we are.

Rev. Dr. Dyson,
I am so glad you wrote this. My heart ached immensely as I watched several journalist and news reporters simplistically rip through the complexity of Rev. Wright. I often, heavily contemplate the ideal that the thoughts and ideals of the American public are being manipulated by certain segments of the media. On the other hand, I believe that many people solely rely on the media as a responsible and truthful source of information. As a thirty-something Black woman, I consistently look to a variety of sources to find credible information. I would hate to think about what my perceptions may be if I had to rely on major news networks as the source of accurate and balanced information. News is supposed to be news but in America, it is often propaganda. I can’t even begin to address the cultural inaccuracies. It is my belief that many of those who feel that Rev. Wrights statements were anti-American, are the same persons who are reaping the economic benefits of slavery and Jim Crow. It is easy to say that nothing is wrong with America, if one (or one’s ancestors) have not lived through not one, but many of its darkest hours. For some these dark hours might have been Jim Crow, for others it might have been Japanese Internment Camps, or Guantanamo Bay. For those that have, I am certain the perspective is much different.
I am disturbed to see history repeating itself and I am even more disturbed at the apathy of some of my elders within the African-American community and clergy who show little objection to the onslaught of Black institutions (such as the church, our family lives, and our community). I applaud those who are taking the stand and saying not this time. We are not children. We are thinking living beings, who have a right to embrace our cultural selves with or without political, media, or public permission or opinions.
Rev. Dr. Dyson, Thank you again for bringing such careful and considerate attention to these matters. As an undergraduate student who is heavily considering seminary, I am constantly inspired by scholars who critically address the pertinent issues of Black people in America (and globally).

Name any crime, vice, sin, social ill, dysfunction, sin or STD that balcks are NOT #1 in worldwide. They have the serial killer issue rapped up and leading in murder nationwide. White collar crime is theirs due to entitlement fraud. Wright is the greatest self appointed emperor the GOP could imagine as their chief tribal insane fool with a natioal podium. He can’t get his eye off anything shiney. B.O. is home crying. hahahahah

In late 2007, Pope Benedict XVI published an encyclical Letter entitled “Christ Our Hope”. While the Pope’s exortation on Hope is not too disimular from the Sermon of Rev. Wright one wonder’s why the Pope can be harshly critical of the in Iraq but he is not subject to the same vectrial that has been directed towards Rev. Wright? The recent PEW survey indicated that Most Americans self described themselves as religious, so how is it permissible for Obama to Throw his Pastor Under the Bus? The very man that Inspired the title of his Book. To say that we Americans are fickle is an understatement.
