Audio: Tavis Smiley Calls Out Barack Obama for Not Attending State of the Black Union Event

Listen here.

Here is my reaction:

There are many ways to show support for someone. One is just by showing your face. Another is by actively working to get things done on their behalf. I value the latter over the former. I don’t doubt for a second that Barack Obama will be stronger on issues helping to improve the lives of all Americans, including African Americans.

Showing your face though is a way you can show support and I can understand why Tavis would call Obama out on this.

On the other hand, showing your face can also be a way of offering “pretend” or “makeup” support when your actions in other ways work against someone’s interests, so showing your face doesn’t always mean full commitment on the issues.

Therefore, I’m fine with Tavis calling out Obama on not showing his face. However, does the fact that Hillary will show her face make me think that she is more strongly committed to issues facing African Americans? Absolutely not. The course of her campaigning over the past few months give testimony to that.

P.S. When Hillary does show up, Tavis needs to ask her why she’s been working to disenfranchise voters and was slamming mandatory minimum disparity reduction behind the scenes even though she voiced support for it at the Tavis Smiley Presidential debate several months ago. And also ask why she said at the Tavis Smiley Presidential debate that “outsourcing is a problem” but previously said in India, “outsourcing will continue.” It would be nice to have people not show up at your events and say one thing, but then go say and do something else when they leave.

This is not to downplay the SOTBU forum or to let Obama off the hook. I think the forums are valuable and I’ve watched most of them. However, there is a technical problem here of how you get politicians’ attendance and rhetoric matched up with their actions.

  1. Royalty! Says:

If Tavis for whom I applaud for his commitment towards the advancement of colored folk is attempting to smear obama over his non commitance to his annual state of the black union “talk” forum, somethings clearly wrong here.

That’s the problem here black folk, we’ve been plotting, chatting and drafting up ideological materpieces to move us all up, but we still are yet to make one move.

Barack offers up something fresh and new, and ‘WE’ want to smack him up because he can’t commit to come talk??

    Cut the bullshit!!

  2. sagereader Says:

^^ As Obama says, “I’m not interested in talking about talk. I’m interested in talking about action.”

  3. aquababie Says:

it’s not like the man is being lazy. he’s running for president. why not wait until the nominees are firmly seated. right now, this will be just a pony show. can you tell me what has firmly come out of the state of the black union besides talk and rhetoric?

  4. QueenGina Says:

I believe the State of America is critical and the State of Black America is a critically important part of America’s current condition. Political will and change are what Black America needs right now. Black America is not a monolith. Their are varying perspectives and opinions in our community. However, what happens to one happens to all, so we must understand where we are to know where we should go. It would be great to see Senator Obama at the forum, however if Senator Clinton is in attendance and he is not, it will not be a reflection of how much he cares about the State of Black America. I believe any opportunity for Senator Clinton to try and regain support and lost appeal with the Black community she will try to capitalize on.

I don’t believe that Senators Obama, Clinton or McCain can add to the discussion on the State of Black America. It should not become a platform for political stump speeches, but rather an opportunity for those who are working in the trenches to share what is going on and what they need. The candidates should however ,as they seek to lead this nation, learn from the outcomes and information shared during the forum, so that they can address the needs of Black Americans.

  5. William Says:

As the saying goes, “To respect my child is to love me, to disrespect my child is to hate me.”

The SOTBU is Tavis’ child, so he becomes upset when he feels anyone disrespects his child.

I have watched most of the SOTBU over the years on C-SPAN. And, I’ve always felt those conferences were more about the panelists providing entertainment than empowerment.

I was glad to finally be proved wrong when they published The Covenant with Black America. I wonder if they will give an update on the status of achieving the objectives within the covenant, or what candidate (whether still running or not) running for president they felt could have/will help in achieving most of the objectives in the covenant.

  6. William Says:

    Another point.

I agree with you Sagereader. I don’t have a problem with Tavis calling out Barack.

As QueenGina stated, black America is not a monolith, and I wouldn’t expect any black person or leader to support Barack just because he is black. Likewise, I also wouldn’t expect any black person or leader to hold Barack to a higher standard than they would a white politician. I don’t think Tavis is doing this here, but I have seen some examples where I felt black people were holding Barack to a higher standard just because he is black.

I do not think that is fair to Barack or helpful overall.

  7. Alisa Says:

Tavis’ perspective is completely shallow when it comes to this national campaign.

If he had one bit of political savvy on a national scale, he would understand that Clinton has name recognition all over this country and the Clinton brand is well known. Couple that with the fact that she is desperate and currently sliding, she has no choice but to accept a last minute invitation to this forum.

Obama on the other hand does not have that luxury. It is a proven fact that once he is able to get before the people and spend some face time with them going over his vision and policies, he is extremely successful at gaining their support and closing the “Clinton brand name” gap. If he does not get elected, he will be in no position to address any issues important to the african american community, therefore, it is far more important at this stage of the campaign for him to focus on that than on Tavis’ forum.

For Tavis to pout and not understand these dynamics is political naievty.

  8. Bill Says:

    Amen Alisa!!!

Clinton is short on money. She is taking advantage of every opportunity to get “free” air time.

Barak, concentrate on Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Tavis can wait. And not that it matters, but I am an American who happens to be black.

  9. Tiffany Molten Says:

Tavis must be out of his mind. He is on the most selfish people I have ever heard in my life. Didn’t they have a black/brown issue debate, did they not talk about this. You really dissapoint me Mr. Smiley. We are trying to win an election with the american people, not the black people or white people the entire people. If you can stop smelling yourself so much- you might be able to catch that. I am sorry if I disrespect anyone (including Smiley) but please, get over yourself!!!!!!

  10. Erica Says:

Love Language: I am embarrassed by the fact Tavis would even stoop to such a mud slinging stance. It would appear from his condescending attitude that he is trying to turn the people against Obama for not showing up. Its as if he’s trying to tell the public that there thoughts and beliefs shouldn’t be in align with Obama’s choice. Comparing Obama to the republicans who didn’t show up to his forum in 2007 is down right awful and he should be ashamed. He went on to say that we need to stop the Hater, Trader and Sell-Out way of thinking. Tavis seems to be the only Hater here. I can’t believe that after all we have accomplished not only as a race but as Americans we still have to be force to listen to people’s negative views and they feel that we should follow them just because they are educated and prominent in the African American society.
We are trying to change the world for the better. I used to support him and even bought his book but I can no longer. He has shown his true color and its upsetting. I speak for myself as a black woman when I say there is no haterism going on between blacks regarding a vote for Hilary or a vote for Obama. I resent Tavis for making that a forefront in his commentary. Tavis appears angry more so at Tom and Sybil for asking Senator Obama (future President of the United States) to call him more so than him not showing up to his event. He should be mad at himself for starting this drama with the Senator.
Of course, Hilary will come she’s struggling for the black vote and any way she can get it, she will at this point…not to mention her campaign is running out of funds. I like Maxine Waters just as well and seeing as though she is supporting Hilary has not changed what I think of her. Tavis has a rapport with the Clinton’s and is miffed by the fact Obama is not willing to appear in his forum which is very sad on Tavis’s part …..and that’s the bottom line. Obama is running for the PRESIDENCY and I hope to God he pulls through.

  11. Duchess Says:

Tavis is sometimes a flake! He is selfish and should realize that neither of the candidates will attend everything, even, for Tavis.

  12. Sophia Says:

Let me interject a bit of irony here. So Tavis states that Tom & Sybill do not speak for him; yet in the same message, he talks as though he peaks for Black America? Excuse me, I must not have gotten the memo! Furthermore, where was Tavis during the 2004 and 2000 Presidential elections. I don’t recall Al Gore, John Kerry, or GW Bush being “called out”. This is a nothing more than a modern day minstel show. Please stop insulting by intelligence by using such vernacular as “one mo’ ‘gin” etc. This should indicate what Mr. Smiley thinks of us, that he can’t even speak proper English when attempting to send us a message. Please take a step back when you claim that Barack isn’t being held to a different (ridiculous) standard! As mentioned in earlier comments, we are not a monolithic race. If you don’t want to vote for or support Barack - don’t! I am one of his staunchest supporters, but I am not here to win you over. Voting is personal. It is a right and a choice one should make based on their own life experience and views. I’ll be damned if Tavis Smiley (or anyone else for that matter) take this very personal choice from me!

  13. sagereader Says:

Tavis knows he can’t be mad at Obama for too long, because he’ll need him. He’ll have another Presidential All-Star forum or need Obama to come on his night show soon and he’ll forget all about it.

  14. TB Says:

Sounds to me Tavis is upset Obama declined, which I see nothing wrong. Obama is at a critical stage in his campaign. I would decline too. Obama is smart. He’s doing what has gotten him this far. He should continue hitting the voters personally, which I think is more effective than going on a damn show. Besides, he can’t go on every damn show that invites him. Obama has gone on multiple blacks shows for the clueless people that are very misinformed. People have to remember that Hillary is a brand name. She’s very much nationally known and people know what she’s about. Also, majority of black voters are voting for Obama. Of course, she’ll accept an invitation to a show with a predominantly black audience. How often do you see someone on tv and don’t like he/she? But then, you meet he/she in person and began to like them. Maybe Obama doesn’t like Tavis, but wanted to be cordial. Who knows? It’s politics man.

One more thing, I don’t understand how people keep saying blacks are only voting for Obama because he’s black. What makes you so sure of this? Have you surveyed every black Obama supporter? If a white person is voting for Obama, what do you say then? When a black person votes for a white person, why no one says blacks are voting for white people because they’re white? I support Obama because I believe in him, characteristically and his ability to effect change. I’m black and I just happen to be supporting a black candidate, but not because of his race. When blacks are involved, why does the idea of race often come into play? And I keep hearing people say this is a historical year. “We have a black man running and a woman.” Why no one says a white woman?

  15. mdgirlforobama Says:

personally, i think Tavis is out of line. especially his snub of Michelle Obama who is a great representative for her husband. i agree with the blogger who asked if he would have denied Bill and opportunity to speak if Hillary could not attend. I guarantee that Hillary will spend more time dissing Barack than speaking to the issues just like Bill dissed Sista Solja at the BNC. do we really need to give her this forum in a race that is so important? it is one thing to have white people talk about you behind your back, it is another to have them do it in your house. i hope Tavis made the right decision.
    i don’t think so.

  16. oyep Says:

I use to like Tavis Smiley a lot but now I want to say…FUCK YOU Tavis. You are a complete idiot who is behaving like a sheep within a ego-c social box. I thought you were much smarter thn that but now I see you are like most dumb ass wanting to be smart brother. You are trying to exploit Obama to make money..ASSHOLE. I HATE YOU. You are like most Hater in our community trying to stop something great for our future and kids

  18. Fred Says:

Tavis, give it a rest. The man is running for President of the United States and he is in a very tough campaign. If you want to help, send Barack some money. Otherwise shut-up!

  19. krod001 Says:

Tavis needs to get over himself. His ego has been bruised and he is not as “Important” as he thought he was. Honestly, I expected better from him. However, to dis Mrs. Obama is classless. I had no idea Tavis was that shallow.

Just like poster “Fred Says” put it Send Barack some money AND shut-up. I think Tavis has marginalized himself enough

  20. Paul J from Los Angeles Says:

Watch Hillary doesn’t show up. Tavis needs to relax, take a back seat, and get on the Obama train! Like Russel Simmons said on Tavis’ opening show on BET when he called him a “house Negro”….Later for Tavis!!

  21. Carla Says:

Tavis, a couple of years ago while listening to a radio show which you were speaking on. You stated a woman had perchased your name tavissmiley.com for her e-mail address and would sell it to you for $10,000. I thought it was good business sense, on her part but, you referred to the woman as a hefer. I knew then you had a problem. You are stuck on yourself, and right now yourself don’t look too good. You are not as big as you think you are. Please look at the big picture and then you will realize you are not a part of it. When you want someone on your show you really have to take into consideratiion that they may not be able to make it. As important as think you are, if I had been asked to be on your show I would not have been able to make it either. I have to wash my hair.

  22. VMB Says:

Wow! I am just amazed at how wrong I have been about Tavis over the years. Until now, I have been one of his followers and have attended conferences, set sail on the Fantastic Voyage and went to the panel discussion. I have purchased his empowerment cards as well as book. However, as of late, I am absolutely FURIOUS with his unjust and unfounded treatment and reactions in regards to Obama. I definitely support Obama, not because of his race or even that he has been my state senator, is my US Senator, or is a member of the same church that I attend. I was a Clinton supporter, as many of us, for years BUT in listening/seeing Obama’s debates, interviews, etc. and having seen his actions. it is my opinion that he is The REAL DEAL!
It’s okay for Tavis not to support Obama as his choice, but I have a SERIOUS problem when Tavis personally attacks Obama or doesn’t hold the other candidates to the same “Tavis expectations”. I am disappointed in his slanted view and the way he comes across the airwaves with his nonsense. I am sure that he has already lost the support he used to have in the Black community. However, I can only speak for myself…he has lost my support for sure and I will no longer view his show or listen to his commentaries…it’s a waste of my good time. Let’s do this, OBAMA!!!

  23. Semone Says:

I am extremely disappointed in Tavis Smiley! For him to be so critical of Senator Obama because he couldn’t attend the State of the Black Union is ridiculous! Senator Obama is RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT! This such a critical point in his campaign! He needs to compaign in the states. Can’t you see that if he becomes President he can do great good for not only African Americans, but ALL people!!! So, I’m sorry at this point and time, his campaign should be his primary focus! Why is it everyone can see that but you Mr. Smiley??? And to reject Michelle Obama’s offer to come in Sen. Obama’s place I think was rude and inappropriate! And considering Carla’s comment above statement that Tavis called a woman a “heifer”, he sounds like a misogynist! Afterall, Sen. Clinton is running for president based in large part on the credibility she received as the first lady of the U.S.. You may have just dissed our next first lady!!! Yes, it does sound like Tavis is quite full of himself, and is suffering from the “crabs in a bucket” syndrome. Tsk, tsk, Mr. Smiley. I’m really disappointed in you. All the work you should be doing to unite African Americans in this country…you just took two steps backward and are starting to cause a divide. I hope you can fix it before your credibility and reputation are any further damaged.

  24. Leslie Says:

I am disappointed in Tavis Smiley! I have been a fan of the State of Black America since its inception. I have tuned into CSPAN and watched for the entire event. I do not believe that any of the candidates have a place at the event. The State of Black American Forum is our time to discuss our issues. Quite frankly, rather than hearing from Hillary Clinton (who will put on a show for the Mondays!), I’d like an update from Tavis on Covenant with Black America. Other than generating funds for you and your foundation what has come of the covenant. let’s talk about the state of black new orleans in the aftermath of Katrina, let’s talk about the state of education in this country, let’s talk about the Iraq war and how recruiting is targeting our young people. All Hillary Clinton is going to do is tell us what we she thinks we want to hear so we will vote for her. And unfortunately Tavis fell in the trap. Be careful Tavis, you are going want Barack to come next year when his President Obama. As my nana said do not cut off your nose to spite your face!!!

  25. JACQUELINE Says:

I was quite disappointed when I learned of Tavis Smiley’s tyrade on Senator Barack Obama. Due to my work schedule, I had not had an opportunity to listen in on the TJM show in quite some time, so I was not aware that Tavis’ ego had expanded so out of control. I find it hard to believe that someone so educated and who has been an instrumental player in supporting African-American causes could so callously issue an ultimatum to intimidate and force someone to appear at his event. How dare he attack the credibility of a black man that has demonstrated nothing but dignity and sincerity towards all people of our nation as he has been successfully running this unprecidented and historic race. And how insulting was it for him to tell Michelle Obama that it would be inappropriate for her to speak on her husband’s behalf. Just who does Tavis think he is? The only explanation for Tavis’attempt to now divide African-Americans and derail Obama’s presidential efforts would be that he is jealous that Senator Obama has far exceeded in taking over the political lime light or is it that Mr. Smiley is performing duties which would enable him to collect on personal gains promised by the Clintons should Hillary win office. Although I am appauld by Tavis’behavior, I am so proud to see that my African-American brothers and sisters are not following his Pide-Piper lead. It is apparent by this blog that the majority of TJM show listeners are disgusted by his arrogance and their comments should demonstrate to Tavis, as well as Tom, that we are paying attention and are not willing to go along with their embarrassing display. These actions are serious enough to make me decide that I no longer will be willing to tune into Tavis’ editorial spots. In addition, I feel that Tom should see the negative responses that Tavis’ actions have caused and take note that his listenership can take a hit as a result. Tom should do the right thing and check Tavis for he has stepped too far out of bounds. We are all watching and will act accordingly. Listen to your loyal fans before we become ex-fans

  26. AL MILLER Says:

TAVIS I AM A STRONG SUPPORTIVE AFRICAN AMERICAN HUSBAND OF A BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN AMERICAN SISTA WHO JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE A PHD IN EDUCATION. I COMPLETELY GLOW WHEN MY WIFE OPENS HER MOUTH AND BEGINS TO EDUCATE MY PEOPLE AND MY TWO LOVELY DAUGHTERS. SPEAKING FOR MY NEXT PRESIDENT. YOU TRUELY DID YOURSELF AND YOUR FANS AN INJUSTICE. A REAL MAN WHO ACTUALLY CONTENDS THAT HE REPRESENTS US AS A PEOPLE, WOULD PUBLICALLY APOLOGIZE AND WE CAN ALL MOVE ON. I LOOK FOREWARD TO WATCHING YOUR SHOW W/ MY FAMILY AS WE ALWAYS DO (ONCE I’VE HEARD YOU WERE MAN ENOUGH TO APOLOGIZE)

  27. bng Says:

Tavis’s 2007 State of the Black Union conference bashed Obama last year and this year he singled Obama out in all of his Tom Joyner Morning Show commentaries in a very disturbing way. You can listen to them at http://www.blackamericaweb.com/site.aspx/sayitloud/smiley; and here’s the bashing from 2007 SOBU http://kr.truveo.com/Obama-Snubs-State-of-Black-America-Conference/id/2971481272

Tavis tone and commentaries have been just as disturbing as Bob Johnson, Rangel and I really don’t know what to say about Andrew Young. Tavis examination of Hillary is null. And I hope for the sake of all America he won’t bash Senator Obama in this public platform while uplifting Hillary, it would be a sad day. He has attacked Obama with the same mean tone as Bill Clinton. I was really hoping for a more objective view from Mr. Smiley instead of a personal one. Tavis we are not as emotional as you think we are; we can hold an applaud, so we choose not to clap along with you on this one.

  28. Anonymous Says:

Barack Obama is NOT running to be the president of African Americans. He is running for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

How do you think Obama will best service AA, by attending this one event, or as President of the United States?

Tavis had this date planned for a while, he was well aware of the dates? Who died and made tavis and this symposium THE voice of black folks? And why does ANY candidate owe him their appearance?

  29. John Says:

At the end of the audio I heard Travis Smiley remarks brought to you by Walmart. Those of us who know the history of Hillary with Walmart have to laugh

  30. Obama08 Says:

    Travis,

Ask Hillary why is she trying to get them to count those 2 states? She saids that it would be an injustice to disfrancise the voters in those to state. My question is, if she thought it was wrong why did she agree to not campaigne there? Why didn’t she fight for it before? Sounds like she is flip flopping to me. I think that she would do dishonest things just to get POWER.

This future First Lady of the US is really a lady of class. lol

The cool response of the Obamas to little tantrum-filled Tavis Smiley is the epitome of eloquence and, mental and emotional equanimity. lol

To have the inner fortitude to be so highly educated and successful, and yet to still remain so simple is immensely empowering.

That is why the Obamas are true and worthy leaders of ANY nation on the planet, from relatively small USA to gigantic China with a billion more citizens!

  34. Lowell from Sacramento, Ca. Says:

I am just about finished with Tavis Smiley…….Each year, he holds some Black person in contempt for not attending his affair, so I guess this year it is Barack Obama’s time. I am in agreement with those who have asked Tavis to get over himself. He doesn’t represent all Black people, especially not this one. If his show is meaningful, it would have a more diverse panel on it instead of the same old cronies each year. When Obama talks about change, it should include Hillary Clinton, Tavis Smiley and Bill Clinton. When we gave Bill Clinton our support and love, he gave us Monica Lewinsky in return. In that single act, he disrespected us, as Black supporters, Hillary Clinton, a supportive wife, Chelsea, a supportive daughter and the entire Democratic party, including Monica Lewinsky. Hillary, with all her decision-making prowess, forgave him. When she uses him to campaign for her, she is assuming that we, too, have forgiven him. Well, this Black man has not, will not and shouldn’t be asked to forgive him. He needs to go home, or back to Monica, for I don’t want see or him him anymore. This subject needs to be discussed because the Republicans are going to kick her butt with it. Tell Bill Clinton to take a long walk off a short pier and take Tavis Smiley with him.

  35. QueenMutamba Says:

I’m not surprised by Sambo Tavis’ actions. I never liked him anyway and could always see thru his, “I’m all about helping my people” game for his real, all about me fakeness. When my U.S. Senator from Chi-town does win the Presidency, Tavis will come crawling back to Barack on his hands and knees like a spook at the door, back-room dealing, teeth sucking dumb-asshole he really is begging for forgiveness. When this happens, Barack should tell him to kiss his ass!

  36. DBW Says:

Okay Mr. Tavis Smiley. I have heard your false premise. “What does it mean to be a free black man and a free black woman?” Now let me first tell you; the extent of my love for my people is written “Love my neighbor as myself” meaning, I will love everybody as much as I love myself. No more and no less. That is from the mouth of My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now if you have graveyard love for anybody including your black people then I will be at your furneral soon. However, if you are having a God syndrom just because Obama will not or is unable to accept your invitation to the “State of the Black Union” then grow up. You already know that “united we as Americans stand and divided we as Americans will fall.” How far have we fallen, as a nation, for you to try to be a divider during this time of urgency to change the direction of American politics? This is not about you Tavis Smiley. Tavis what can Hillary say to change her pass political position for all American citizens? Can you say “NAFTA?”or “GAT?” or “The Patriot Act?” or the “Protect the American Act?” You must owe a big debt to the Clintons to have Hillary on the panel in 2008. Yes! you are free to be talking like a fool. So now that you have shown us, the black family, who side you are on by your words; it is written “do not think more highly of yourself than you ought to.” It is also written “pride goes before a fall.” Be free Tavis Smiley as America goes down to degradation inspired by the Bushes and the Clintions. Once is not enough for a free black man uh? I guess you like shackles better uh? A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Too much learning has made you foolish and brought shame to your mother and all of the people inf America.

    Sad! Sad! Sad!

  37. kaykitty Says:

That was just wrong. I’m going to pray for ya Tavis.

    Be Blessed!

  38. I Do not like tavis Says:

I could not listen to tavis entire message because it was so negative. Is tavis reading his own press clippings? Who the fuck do he think he is–house n###er! Tavis has sold out–he is a community pimp. If he love his people so much–why has none of us ever seen him in Los Angeles in the community. No one can explain what tavis does other than run his mouth–he is the only one benefiting from what he does. tavis do not speak for me. If you are to ignorant or your ego is so huge that you can’t understand why Obama will not attend your dog and pony show–then something is clearly wrong with you. It is of no benefit to attend your dog and pony show because there is no follow up or follow through. Get over yourself and you have lost all credibility with black america–because essentially you will be forever known as the n##ger who tried to derail Obama’s presidential bid. But, you will not be successful–you are the devil and I could here it in your comments. Obviously, black america is not listening to you–we know you can talk but can you count Obama is being supported over whelmingly by black america and we are totaly discounting you and your comments. Please shut the fuck up! You stated that there are three types of people who are supporting these candidates, well let me tell you what Malcolm X said, they are two types of niggers, you need to get out the house. You were clear that you support Hillary and you are a sell out!

  39. Heezy Says:

Tavis is hanging on by a string..as is his show on PBS..he needs to sit down and shut the F*ck up!

    How dare he….

  40. StanVI Says:

I have been listen to Tavis before he left NPR back in the day, because they were slow in serving a more diverse community. I applaud him for his commitment to that cause. However, of late, I feel Tavis is beginning to read his own press clippings. I love Tavis, most of the time, he is a very good interviewer and the State of the Black Union is a great event. He did a good job interveiwing Barack Obama on his NPR show. However, when Tavis need to prop up his rating for his backers, his listen and viewing audience, he will do and say anything that will get him what he wants. After all, his mouth is his business. Read what this Brotha said about Tavis in 2004.

Uno Bohio: Tavis Smiley is a hypocrite

Tavis, back off! What have you done for the Black Community lately. What foundation have you started? What legislation have you authored? What follow-up have you facilitated from the Convenant? What sholarship have you given? What movement have you champion that has manifested success for those that are still struggling?

I think a Presidency could help move the agenda forward, don’t you? BACK OFF.

    February 20, 2008

I listen to Tavis Smiley on the Tom Joyner show and found him to be egotistical. Barack wif, Michelle stated on the Michael Baisden show that she offerred to attend in Barack’s place. Tavis did not want her there. Then he got on the Tom Joyner show and more or less called Michelle a liar. He stated that he did not receive a formal reply from Barack and if, he did he would not have accepted her as a substitute.

This man is out of hand! Michelle is good enough to represent her husband in State campaigns why isn’t she acceptable for Tavis? Barack is a true gentleman and Tavis act like he is working for Bill Clinton and Hillary. What does he owe them? It seems all of our so called leaders always have something to hide.

NO MORE TAVIS FOR ME !!!! WHAT A SELL OUT !!!!!!!

  43. L E. SCOTT Says:

TYPICAL ARROGANT JEALOUS MALE. BOO—-HOOO !!
OBAMA IS ABOUT THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY
TAVIS GET A GRIP, if you had half of Senator Obamas BRAIN, YOU WOULDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. LEAVE THE OBAMAS ALONE AND TAKE SOME ELEMENTARY COURSES LEARN TO ARTICULATE OR SIMPLY PROPERLY USE THE KINGS ENGLISH.

  44. Centaurman Says:

Senator Obama is running for President for all of the people and not any one group. Did Mr. Smiley, over the entire course of his voting life, demanded that the white candidates that he has voted for speak on his show? Senator Obama has a bigger stage to larger platform in delivering his message, and I don’t doubt for a second that he will, once elected, do more for his people than any previous President has in the past. But, first he must be elected President. I say to Mr. Smiley, this man, Obama, is for all of the people and he should speak to all of the people and not simply on a more broader national medium. Remeber, Mr. Smiley, it will take more than simply our African Americans to put Senator Obama in the White house. Should he, if asked, address an all white, jewish, spanish or chinese talk show too? He is a man for all the people of these United States and it is damn time we have a candidate, and soon to be President, that will represent all of the people and restore our creditability throughout the free world.

  45. Centaurman Says:

My wife, Janette, never liked Mr. Smiley and now I see why?

  46. Tycia Says:

Tavis, shame on you! Even the Bible says, “there is a time and season for all things.” Why are you becoming a natinal stumbling block in your brothers way? AS Michelle, stated she is willing to come on behalf of her husband to your sumit fourm, but you told her that was inapporiate. I beseech you my brother stop this division and do what you have been preaching all alone; work with Barack Obama.

    Tycia

  47. Lawrence Says:

Tavis, your State of the Black Union event is important however, it does not trump the opportunity we have of having a man that looks like us residing in the White House. Of course Hillary accepted offer because she’ll do anything and say anything to be elected. Get over yourself before we, us black folk, stop supporting you and have you off the air. Be realistic, how many white folk listen to you? DON’T BITE THE HAND THAT FEED YOU.

  48. Lawrence Says:

I have one more thing I’d like to say. How could a black politician support Hilliary if his or her district voted overwhemingly for Obama? Come time to vote for that Congressman/woman next election period, this needs to brought to the forefront. Black people, let’s not forget them and ensure that they will not represent us next time around. I was also totally shocked to find that several of the pastors/preachers that supported Hillary were paid to do so. This is the battle we face on a daily basis.

  49. Desmera Says:

Barack Obama becoming the first black president is PART of the state of the black union! He has paid his dues to the black community while being a community organizer in Chicago, working for volunteer organizations and being a Civil Rights attorney for those who did not have a voice and were stepped on by the system. Did Tavis ever stop to consider this while he was ranting about Obama not showing up to his event? Is he implying that Obama does not care for the Katrina Victims when he has constantly pushed for their cases and voices to be heard?

Who is Tavis to question Obama’s dedication or loyalty to the black race and our issues? Has he stopped to realize that Obama has a campaign to run and needs this time to secure his nomination so that he CAN get a chance to address the issues while in office? How can Tavis be so selfish not to realize that this is a serious time where candidates have demanding schedules and critical choices to make that may impact their campaign.

Too add to Tavis’ audacity he declined the offer to have Michelle Obama appear in place of her husband. This woman may possibly be the first African-American first lady in the history of the United States, and he did not find her presence worthy?

I do not know if it is arrogance, jealousy or just plain stupidity, but he needs to reconsider his stance at this time and rethink his next move.Of course Hillary Clinton is attending this event because she is in trouble as far as the black vote is concerned and has nothing to lose!

Barack Obama is a hero to many young black men who have lost all hope and he is inspirational to many. If Tavis gives a hoot about the black community as he claims, he would rally behind the one candidate who does represent us and has come from the same experience and has seen America through our eyes. I am shocked and disappointed in Tavis, and I hope he reconsiders immediately.

I am so sick of all of these black leaders from Maxine Waters and Andrew Young to Sheila Jackson Lee and now Tavis Smiley, trying so hard to bring this young black man down. They need to get over the fact that he is the #1 black man in America and it is time for them to step aside!

    Shame on you Tavis Smiley.

  50. RBW48 Says:

I like Tavis — his PBS show is boring –but the brother speaks the truth. He extended an invite to Barack and it was declined. Mr. Obama offered his very capable wife as a substitute to stand in his stead. Do I think Mr. Obama should attend?–sure I do–but he can’t for whatever reason…Michelle Obama would have been a viable substitute.

If I were Tavis I would have GRACIOUSLY accepted Michelle as a sub –stated my preference for her husband — and moved the hell on.

It makes him (Tavis) look bad — I don’t believe he means any harm–He has a passion and a purpose to fulfill also.

Right now, this is trite and ALL of us should move on.

  51. Sina D. Says:

Travis, I believe that you owe an apology to all your (ex) Fans and to the Obama Family. When is this going to happen?

  52. Renay Says:

I agree totally with the writer above…Barack’s run for the White House is a POIGNANT PART OF THE STATE OF THE BLACKUNION. Let the man campaign, there will be plenty of time for you later, Tavis! Barack has big business becoming the president of these United States. He is not running for Blacks or African Americans only, and I do believe he will address the issues to be discuss in Mr. Tavis’ forum and many other issues once he is Commander in Chief. In the mean time Mr. Tavis Smiley should be quiet (I really want to say SHUT UP, but it is rude to actually say so :)), stop being a cry baby and begin paying attention to the big picture here. Tavis sated he would decline “The Closer”, Senator Obama’s beloved wife Michelle Obama, should she offer to come to his shindig in leiu of the Senator. He sounds so ego bruised in this clip of the show, and “I ain’t mad at him”. However, what I don’t appreciate is his insolent, arrogant big mouth, which he refuses to stifle even when it is apparent he should. So, he needs to go suck on his patsy, before I put him in time out!!!!

By the way, I am an African American female who wants this only AND only this to resonate…YES WE CAN!
    Obama ‘08

  53. Lana Says:

I’m furious that Tavis scheduled this state of Black America Address when it was very OBVIOUS that Barack couldn’t be there. Tavis is clearly jealous because he always thought the first Black president would be himself. Barack has been very publically campaigning every single day, and Tavis is well aware that Barack’s schedule has been etched out hour by hour for months to come. So what does Tavis do? Send him an invite in the middle of the campaign trail to come to his “Black only” addresss. Please don’t disagree with “Black only” either…. the audience will very likely be 98% African American. As an African American woman I AM FURIOUS WITH TAVIS. Now it is very likely, this will detract Black votes from someone like Barack who has fought in the streets for Black communities in the past. I have personally seen him in Chicago speak out against all the ills of our community. I never see Tavis unless it’s a publicity stunt. So go ahead, sip tea with Hillary Clinton, while Barack has to face the criticism of not being “down” with is community, BUT also be very ready for his supporters to then tune your radio station right on out. You should do the right thing and allow him to meet with you when his schedule permits. Hillary is using this as a way of saying, “See, I told you negroes I understand your plight”— I was not shocked at all to see she cleared her schedule to accept the invite. She knew how quickly we would begin to bring up her racist comments in the past if she didn’t. I’m so sick of us as Black people always trying to tear another Black person who’s succeeding down. He didn’t turn down the event because he wasn’t “Black enough” you idiot, he turned it down because he’s in the middle of campaigning to be the president!

  54. Linda Washington, DC Says:

Tavis Smiley should shut his mouth once and for all. I dont know if anyone knows but Tavis is a Kapa. Apparently, the Kapa organization asked Tavis to speak at one of their functions recently and he outright told them that he will not speak for Free! This is the man who is in love with black people?

  55. jaymac Says:

    HEY TAVIS-
DID YOU GET A LETTER OF DECLINE FROM SEN. JOHN MCCAIN? OR A REPLACEMENT OFFER FROM HIM THAT YOU DECLINED ALSO?

WHY DIDN’T YOU CALL HIM OUT? HMM…..

  56. joyous1 Says:

I have not listened to Tavis in years. I could not tolerate his ego and self-importance. I received an email about his response to Obama’s decision not to attend his event and thought “the boy hasn’t changed”. It saddens me that someone who could potentially be a leader and spokesperson for the educated community of Black Americans can be so self centered and self serving.

I am learning more and more about Obama’s campaign everyday and am becoming more imoressed with this well-educated, well-spoken visionary. I am proud that he is having such great success. How dare Tavis try to tarnish such a historically important campaign because his ego got bruised.

I am pleased to see that the response to Tavis’ remarks call it like it is. Tavis needs to grow up, be a bit more politically savvy and understand that this man is running for President of the United States. I am sure once the election is won, he will have plenty of time to sit and talk with Tavis about every issue under the sun. But the election has to be won first.

  57. wginca Says:

Barrack is under tremendous pressure and displaying a high degree of professionalism, competence, grace and intelligence. Tavis, your comments contained a tone of animosity towards Barrack which I thought was unwarranted given his letter of explanation for his inability to attend your event. PS, you don’t speak for me as a black man nor does your panel. Many AA do not need you or your panel of experts to know that racism is system in America. We finally have an opportunity to support a candidate that can personally related to, and have a bonifide sensitivity to this problem and who knows that ALL of America is looking towards his leadership. Tavis, if you believe your rhetoric you should understand Barrack’s position and apologize. Seriously, you owe the Obamas’ a public apology.

  58. Lili Says:

Can you say EGO? Oh, Tavis, get over yourself. We’re simply not buying this foolishness!!! Obama doesn’t have time for this NOW. This is shameful.

  59. yay Says:

The Union is the United States of America made up of all its people. It is to them that Senator Obama owes his gratitude and allegiance. His present position is Senator for a State within the Union. What is his position in State Of The Black Union? I was unaware that S.O.T.B.U. existed until I saw something on television about Mr. Smiley being taken aback and insulted that Senator Obama didn’t attend the event. Who does S.O.T.B.U. represent? Who are its members? Who are its leaders? Is it a private organization or public? If public, why has it not promoted itself better? If private,it seems to me that the organization name is presumptious. To believe that it can take upon itself the overstanding mantle of defining for whom it advocates without consulting the defined is an exercise in hubris.

  60. KC Says:

Smiley is a tied-tongue, over-inflated-ego, faux black person who does NOT speak for me. It’s like he’s trying to single-handedly sabotage the one viable, highly-qualified candidate this country has seen in a very long time! I agree with others who have rightly described Smiley’s rant as a glorified hissy fit done for the purpose of trying to steal some of Senator Obama’s limelight. Tavis, go sit your behind in a corner somewhere - your in time out.

Great observation by another poster that one of Tavis’s corporate sponsors is the corporation of which Hillary is a former board member. Tavis, a sell-out to the Big Corp - in bed with the Clintons. This behavior and mindset is part of the old paradigm. Obama and the grassroot troops are part of the new paradigm. Tavis speaks out of fear - he and those like him know their days are numbered. Imminent extinction is a sobering experience.

  61. Salsgal Says:

I am very surprised at this reaction of Tavis Smiley. Maybe there could be another time, when the pressures of this election is over to re-schedule this appearance.I’m sure that Barack Obama would be more than glad to make his presence at a time when his very busy schedule permits him to appear.

  62. Sylvester Says:

Tavis, I respect you greatly and your stance of accountability and the issues has been wonderful. this time take a stance of understanding.

  63. A Rural Point of View Says:

Tavis, Relax. Barack was otherwise engaged.Respect that and remember this. there is room at the table for those who are willing to truly love and labor in order to bring about real change! Peace.

  64. Dollie Says:

Tavis should have accepted Michelle Obama in the place of Barack Obama. She is intelligent and gifted. What was his problem? Would he have turned down Bill Clinton if Hillary Clinton could not attend? I don’t think so. However, Rev. Sharpton put that issue in it’s place. He said that Obama needed to be where he is and Hillary Clinton needed to be in New Orleans to answer some questions. Tavis you are one of my favorites and I have daughters who are trying to break into the Movie and Film industry; and one day they might have to call on you, so I do not want this note to hurt any of their chances, but on this one Travis you have an Onion.

  65. wasiu-abby Says:

Can we all get along Yes he made mistake on this one. Travis, by the power invest in me you”re pardoned.

  66. crazy&beautiful_world Says:

Who are you kidding Tavis? Remember BET? Remember gyrating waists? What did you do to address that? Stop talking and start acting today.

  67. jusme70 Says:

Travis is a loud mouth, blowhard!! He likes the sound of his own voice!!! Sen. Obama is running a Presidental Campaign!!! Travis is out for press. What has the SOTBU really done? A bunch of rhetoric and speeches with no outcome. This is Tavis’vehicle to make money. WHAT A JERK!!!

  68. CECIL Says:

MALCOM SAID IT BEFORE. WHEN MASSAS LOSING THE HOUSE NIGGER SAYS WE GONNA WIN MASSA.

  69. Denise Says:

I am deeply disapointed in Tavis and how he handled this situation with Obama. Tavis showed the world that he is selfish and self promoting.

  70. Lenny Says:

Tavis we love you man, but stop hatin. Michelle Obama can speak anywhere in the world and you would not allow her to speak at the S.O.B.U. We know you’re sponsored by Wal-Mart and we know Hillary Clinton is on the board of Wal-Mart. You are losing my respect. Don’t try to act like Obama has something left to prove to our community. Do a little research and I’m sure you will find what you already know. Obama is the truth and has already put in years of work in the inner cities of Chicago. Now is not the time for him stop campaigning and join your little “sideshow” Barack has an uphill battle that he is winning. He is winning inexeperienced voters, Rebublicans, Dems, and Independednts just by exposing people to his message of hope and change. He’s gaining support day by day and there are people who still don’t even know what he has done. Fall back and let him do what he has to do. When he wins in November, you can invite him all you want.

  71. Denise Says:

I am deeply disappointed in how Tavis Smily handled the State of the Black Union issue with regards to Senator Obama. I think Tavis needs an ego check!

  72. Pastor Michael Says:

Tavis is wrong. Sometimes people become self absorbed and think that it is all about them. I agree with what Mr. Obama did. Would you leave a treasure that you have just discovered and come upon, knowing that if you leave it someone else would get it? The treasure is for everyone.A wise man knows his moment to stand and his moment to leave. He, Mr. Obama did the right thing.

  73. Lilly Says:

By the time I got to the comments of February 16th, I was weeping so I went back and read and listened before posting. I am still weeping. Unless I missed something, it seems to me that these messages are doing to Tavis the very thing we are accusing Tavis of doing to Senator Obama. Holding him to a higher and imaginary standard. Hatin’ on him. Putting him in a box. Strokin’ the collective ego of our community that seems to be running after the next big thing. Someone offered that the S.O.B.U was Tavis’ baby and he was upset about his baby being dismissed, from what I have read, Obama is now the black community’s baby and we are upset about him being dissed. What saddens me is that from what I see - - - IT NEVER HAPPENED! Tavis made a rwquest. Senator Obama made a request. Tavis expressed an opinion. Senator Obama expressed an opinion. Now everyone is taking a side to express their opinion of the opinions. This is exactly what our prize media commentator, Tavis Smiley and our future President, the first Black president of the United States do not need - - our crab in the barrel mentality being aired publically with conviction, venom and absolutely no accountability. For more years that I can remember, we have embraced and supported Tavis Smiley’s efforts on behalf of the Black community. Now because he, as a journalist says something about Senator Obama, who we are still learning about Tavis is an ego tripping sell out? It doesn’t happen that quickly my loves. You cannot be in the public eye this long, doing this much work and not show your true colors. Tavis has been a journalist longer than Senator Obama has been a public servant. We have supported and benefitted from the ground breaking YES ground breaking efforts of Mr. Tavis Smiley who brought us news, information and commentary unparralled by any other Black commentator. In fact, I could be wrong but I believe it was Tavis Smiley who brought us up-to-date news about Senator Obama and his bid for the Senate. We folks in Philly, DC, Detroit etc has not clue who Barak Obama was until we heard Tom Joyner and Tavis Smiley sing his praises in his bid to be the first black senator from IL. I also believe it was Tavis who brought Senator Obama to our children in his leadership iniative. Young black college students heard from Obama about the demands of leadership and the need for self-mastery. Perhaps some of the posters should have been there. Now, Obama is the next big thing and Tavis is hatin’. I weep because it is so sad that with the elegance and class that both Mr. Smiley (on BET, on NPR, on the Tom Joyner Show, with the Covenant For Black America and at each and every S.O.B.U.) and that which Senator and Mrs. Obama have exemplified for us and to us (as a unified family in his bid for the presidency), we are using them as the basis to voice our internalized self-hatred and lack mentality. People WE CAN HAVE THEM BOTH! Tavis doing his job as a prize winning journalist and Senator Barak Obama as a presidential candidate. Neither has to bow to the other and neither need be discarded to lift the other up. I love you Tavis Smiley. I love you Barak Obama. Please forgive me if I have in anyway contributed to mass confusion, public hysteria and the devaluing of your role in world history. Please forgive US for not lifting you both as beacons for the world to see. Still I weep.

  74. WG in CA Says:

I’m sorry but your long note replete with emphathy for Tavis just does not move me on this issue. I think your heart is in the right place but sometimes folks are just wrong — you know?

  75. Christine Says:

Obama should concentrate on getting the votes need to be elected President at this crucial time. There is clear evidence from the polls and voting patterns that the more people hear and learn about Obama, the more they support him. He’s just had to do more work to be known since he is competing with a Clinton celebrity. Ohio and Texas are must-win states.

Once President, Obama will be far more powerful and more effective in addressing the problems in New Orleans and the country at large.

  76. Chase Says:

    An old school perspective:

I listen to Tavis’ show whenever possible and enjoy the diversity of his guests. I have watched him grow as a journalist and am glad to see his success. However, he is wrong in his Obama ordeal. I believe he is letting his passion for Black America overcome his role as a journalist.

Even though I have never watched one of the forums in its entirety, I have viewed enough to have an opinion. The forum is staged as if the panelist are the “think tank” for Black America. Don’t get me wrong, they are intelligent folk, however, In some instances, they appear to be bestowing their “smartness’ upon us.

Just as a side bar someone should find the interview that Chris Rock had with Tavis earlier this year. Towards the end of the interview, Chris in his comical way, made a point about the forum.

    Chow

  77. Gman60 Says:

I am a 72 year old African American. In l971 I retired from the military and subsequently became involved with the civil rights/equal opportunity operations of the Federal Government. In my experience I have personally witnessed all kinds of folk some very genuine and others “just hustlers”. I agree with Tavis there a plenty civil rights hustlers out there. He should know because I consider him the king of hustlers. I do not know why this man thinks it so important for Black people particular Obama to appear on that jive C-Span program. Tavis Smiliey does not speak for me and I do not speak for Tavis. At 72 years of age I do not need a Tavis Smiley to suggest what I should think about or how I should feel about this country or anything else. I listened with great difficulty to most of the BS and egos expressed on that stage…the accumlation of some of the greatest phonies on earth on that program. It has nothing to do with race…there are just as many phoney whites, asians, hispanics etc etc as there are blacks…believe me plenty. If you get something out of this annual hoodwinking event then that is great. There is so much money out there around civil rights and it (the money) has to contaminated a lot of people….money does that you know. The more you get the more you become contaminated. The problem with the Tavis’s is that they grow so large symetrically with talk and lead poor disallusioned people down the road to believe that they themselves come to believe their own BS…these people are highly gifted and masters in articulation. I hope some of this makes sense. I do not mean to leave the impression that all of the Tavis’s are evil or phoney….they make plenty money…..just like the TV ministery…lots of money and that is the problem.

  78. Brix Says:

I think that Tavis Smiley is really over board in his response to Obama not committing to speak at “The State of the Black Union.” I watched Senator Clinton and her interview and all that she did was push for her candidacy. Also, Obama is running to be the president of the United States and not the president of black people and I, as a black man, as an African American, do not see anything wrong with Obama refusing to paint himself as merely a black candidate the way Hillary Clinton is pushing the concept of a woman’s time to be president. It is time for the right person to be president for the right purpose.

  79. Ann Bourgeois Says:

Last year when I began to plan the Febuary, Black History issue of my publication, the Louisiana Sapphire Magazine, I made contact with Tavis Smiley’s office in Los Angeles, to do a cover story on his accomplishments and overt concern for his race of people. I sent e-mails, made numerous phone calls and on more than one occasion explained to the office receptionist the nature of my business so they could relay my message to Tavis’ Manager. Well no one ever bothered to accept or decline my request to feature him in the magazine. Obvious to me my publication wasn’t mainstream enough.

I am so tired of hearing prominent black people make sound bites about how blacks who have made it have a responsibility to help others achieve their dreams, only to find that when someone like myself asks for that help we find ourselves looking at a facade .
I am disappointed in Tavis Smiley and all of the other black powers that be who are choosing not to support Barack Obama. Because the irony of all their reasoning and negativity is that the one whom they reject is the one who symbolizes the ones who allowed them to be where they are today.

It does not seem logical to me how people who seem to speak for black people, when called upon to stand up and be counted can sell their vote to the highest bidder.

I watched Don Cornelius all of my young life stir-up black folks with his “Love,Peace, and Soul” motto, only to see him share all of the wealth that he accquired through black people , share it with someone of another race.

I also watched Bob Johnson of Bet become a multi-millionaire contributing to the deliquency of millions of black minors as he peddled degrading language, and ponorgraphy to our children as a form of musical entertainment; a crime that I feel he should be tried and convicted on. He now has the nerve to ridicule Barack Obama. Some of our people are slowly dying from the “Willie Lynch” syndrome.

Our Black race of people are living on the remnants of slavery. The same city where Tavis tried to summon Barack Obama to , my hometown of New, Orleans, is where hundreds of black men where murderded and decapitated in the “Slave Revolt of 1810 ,seeking the freedom to be able to choose when and where they wanted be.

I have never heard Tavis Simley ask his friend Hillary Clinton about reparations for all of the iniquitous things that have been done in this country to black people, nor did I see the Clinton Administration try and make amends for all of the black lives that have been snuffed out in this country just because of their skin tone. Some black people say that what was done to us so long ago should be forgiven and forgotten, but I cannot forget. I n this country there is no statue of limitations on Murder !!

In my opinion it is Tavis Smiley and others like the ones that I have mentioned who, when they assimilate into society, make themselves feel good by being able to move in circles of the elite and label everyday people as class-les, and an embarassment when we voice our opinions.
Tavis Smiley in my opinion you are a SELL-OUT !!

  80. Sam Brinkley Says:

I think Tavis owes Barack an apology. Aren’t he the type of brother who should have all of the top-notch Public Relation skills?

While I feel that Tavis’ involvelment in the black cause is a stepping stone to a higher plane, I think that this snafu just cut him off at the pass.

  81. Sims Says:

Tavis has lost his damn mind, who the hell do he think he is. I think we all should write in to PBS to get him off the air. There is nothing on the State of Black America that was said this year that wasn’t talked about last year. I for one didn’t watch. Why don’t you ever talk about those of us in the Black community that are not begging for a handout. Just for your information you are not the spokeman for Black America. By the way you talk about one being willing to die for the Black cause, we need people like that to work in the communities to prevent gang violence, why don’t you volunteer. Tavis lets face it—you are all about the money.

  82. Coats Says:

Sadly, Tavis seems so self-serving, arrogantly “full off himself” as he tries to over articulate stale, irrelevant issues. What has his platform ever really accomplished for “black America”? I think he is intimidated (I would hate to think envious, grow up!) by a truely intelligent and proven articulate man, who REALLY has the power and know how to accomplish great things for black America and ALL of America. Seems as though Tavis wishes or thinks that he is something that he just is not. If he is not supporting Barack, that’s cool, just stop trying to corral him into “your” little sandbox. Stop pouting because your dream to become America’s first black President slid out the other end of the PIPE! By the way, can he come up with a better word than “FOLK” to address his “beloved” race??!!

  83. Linda Says:

    Tavis,

Why didn’t you ask Hillary to take Obama’s place?

  84. Mosi Says:

Tavis is a deeply wounded person. His head is too big and he hears his own voice over any reason sometimes. He really should get some things cleared out between himself and his mother. thats who he is really angry with, and his stepfather and bilogical father…I like hime but I always thought he was hung up on his own voice and speaking ability…but after reading his book..I see why he is so wounded..

  85. Rob Says:

Tavis should be ashamed of himself that is the problem with blacks now, thats why we are not unified as a race because everytime one of has the opportunity to make a difference in the world here comes somebody from our own race to tear them down for their own selfish agenda.

  86. Anikay Says:

Truly, I respect and admire both Barack Obama and Tavis Smiley.

However we in the Black community have to disengage ourselves from the “Soul Patrol” which states;unless, until… someone passes OUR limtus test they are not worthy or “Black enough”.
Tavis’ annual forum allows for much discussion and offers those in the audience a great array of ideas from the Black intelligentsia.

But how much gets done afterwards?

Last week, two weeks after the SOBU forum, the National Urban League released it’s statistics on the state of the Black community. How well do you think we are doing?

1 in every 9 Black men involved with the penal institution.
70% of Black kids born to unwed mothers
A great majority of Black kids aren’t even graduating from high school!!

To borrow a line from “A Raisin In the Sun”, ,…it seems we spend most of our time making babies and praying…….

or meeting at forums like the SOBU aka “the hollering fest”

I am not suggesting that no one on the panel or in the audience is not also on the front lines of creating change in our community.
However, there are many ways, based on one’s karma and destiny to bring about change.

It is not a narrow path. It cannot be, there is too much work to be done.

To borrow a line from Tavis; ” Black people live way beneath our privilege.”

Too many it seems have given into the status quo.

Obama is running for President of the United States.
Please allow him to do so without the distraction of someone’s hurt feelings and ego.
Let go of the Soul Patrol

  87. Leslie Thompson Says:

Negro(PC) Please. Travis get a life!!!

  88. Alfred Beaty Says:

Sorry Tavis, but you are wrong this time. If you are not helpng Obama, please don’t hurt him.

Tavis, I hope you see the line you have crossed with not just possibly one of the “next great leaders” of this country, but with your own group. Mr. Obama is a “once in a generation” candidate that will bring this nation together and you tear him down because he can’t make it to your event. This is neither the time nor place with PA being an important state for this election to complain.

Give the man his space and let him run for one of the most powerful positions in the world without you bitching about not making it to your SOTBU event.

I haven’t heard any of the audio, but I honestly don’t need to. I’ve been annoyed by the likes of Tavis Smiley and others that sit on panels and hype up a great show. Those that go on book tours and talk, talk, talk. No definitive blue print for change and a way to implement it. None of these things really surprise me. For everyone that has responded, make sure you do more then complain. Be active in your communities and affect change. It’s gonna be alright.

Tavis is such a phony that I saw thru many years ago. Just sit back and observe
him and people of his ilk and it comes thru loud and clear. I’m just glad that I’m not
easily led. The black community needs to learn that we are not all alike and we do
have different tastes, likes, dislikes etc. Who told Tavica the crybaby who needs to
feel love from the community that whatever he says and does is for the betterment
of the entire community. What he really is is a Tom,the same kind that kept the slaves
in check for centuries. We have been infultrated time and time again by people like
him. There is not one solution to our problems, there are many problems so therefore
we need to get busy. But we need to start with the black media and let them know that
they don’t speak for all of us. There is too much clowning on the airwaves today. Everyone wants to try out their comedy routine with my time. There’s nothing wrong with laughing but we need to get serious and now! Tavica downgrading an intelligent, hardworking and well qualified black presedential candidate like Obama
shows the weaknesses in himself and not the candidate. Tavis off of the airwaves is
a blessing from above, now if only the rest will follow.
