WOW!! I am in tears, I am SO proud to be an american and SO proud we are able to voice our beliefs. As Derrick has!! YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D. Perez

  2. Lyschel Says:

    Honestly I am almost speechless…wow…
Derrick…you actually appreciate our FREEDOMS instead of sitting back and complaining about how corrupt our government is. We need more men to take action and use what is simply given to us when you and so many others in the world did not (or do not) have such freedoms and opportunities. I can’t let US off the hook so easy by saying “well consider our choices. That’s why we don’t vote”.
My mother is an immigrant as well. I vote because she could not and because my grandmother fought for me and my future kids to enjoy the liberties of America as equal citizens.
Your words and passion are inspiring.
From a pseudo first generation American…YES WE CAN!

  3. Toni Says:

A truly informed young man. I am proud of him, too. I wish he could tour the country and tell his story on colleege campuses and everywhere else. He should run for some political office–I would vote for him. He should be Obama’s press secretary or one of his cabinet members. We need people like him in government to bring integrity back to that institution. WELL DONE.

  4. Elizabeth B. Says:

As a political science professor who has worked to increase civic knowledge and engagement among young people, I look forward to showing this video in my classes. Regardless of what candidate a person supports, watching this video (and the original interview), forces people to think about poliical participation as a privilege. I will continue to teach, host public forums and conduct research about youth engagement. I now have a powerful new tool to help me do so. Thank you, Derrick!

  5. Aaron T. Says:

Oh wow… I am so close to tearing up right now, it’s not even funny. No, not because of Derricks past, but what he represents to our country now and in the future. His drive, determination and knowledge about promoting a political overhaul is extremely inspirational. He has the the voice to motivate and inspire millions of folks. Listening to this message in its entirety really made me stop and say WOW. GO OBAMA!

  6. Monica Says:

God Bless you Derrick. It was really refreshing and inspiring to listen to your views about exercising the right to vote. Our forefathers and ancesters that fought for that right would be very proud right now.

  7. Terryan Says:

I could not have said it better. I love his drive and his appreciation for Democracy. As an immigrant and naturalized citizen myself I can empathize with Derrick. Keep on my brother. Big up!

  8. Lisa Says:

Thanks for your inspiring message, Derrick! I’m at a loss for words to express how grateful I am that you’re out there spreading not only Obama’s message of unity and change, but the message of civic participation. It’s great to see so many people in our generation that are invigorated by this election, but there is still a lot of apathy out there. I hope that we can all be soldiers of democracy, and encourage others that we can in fact change the world. Yes we can!

  9. Sky Bluesky Says:

That man is a powerhouse. That is the strongest presentation in support of Obama I have seen yet.

What an eloquent endorsement, not just of Obama, but of the dream. The American dream - he brings it to life and demonstrates that it’s not just a myth or a punchline, but a reality. Thank you for sharing this video. Right on, Derrick. Don’t sleep!

  10. Blonde Italian Says:

    Derrick,
You blew me away. I’d vote for you.

  12. Jay Says:

well said my friend! what i really appreciate among many other things, is the presence of that global HIP HOP consciousness in your words. obama has an appreciation of the culture, and i am enjoying seeing the arts and hip hop rally around his movement. heard while i was teaching at crenshaw high school today: “stop the drama, vote for obama” haha big respect!!

  13. Cornelia Says:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about why you support Barack Obama! Today’s technology has empowered the individual and we are definitely living in a time where we have the opportunity to be heard and make a difference as you have done so well. It has only been recently that we have been able to put forth our opinions in real time and unfiltered. We receive the Mike - Derrick! Like you, I too am impressed with his ability to rise above partisanship, provide new ideas to address old problems, bring diverse views together to insure that all are heard and considered, and most impressive, Barack’s ability to articulate “Change We Can Believe In” across all demographics. His authenticity and selflessness have been missing on the national political scene. His time has come. Our time has come. Vote Barack!

  14. Antanette M. Says:

THANK YOU!! Not only did you respond to all of his questions that he continued to throw at you, but you did it with such knowledge and willingness to answer EACH question. I am so glad that the reporter decided to ask you those questions, to show AMERICA that not all BLACK men are under educated or miss informed when it comes to politics. You really hit all the right points with regards to Obama’s stand for OUR future. Well done.

  15. Amma Oloriwaa! Says:

    My fellow Brooklynite, Derrick,
It is obviously divine intervention that gave you the platform of the initial interview with the reporter. That and your follow up makes it obvious why this happened. I hope that both these interviews are seen by the Barrack campaign and that they make a way to bring you into their team. I also beleive this is a chance for you to be recognized and have a larger platform for your “Take back the mic/ke” campaign. “Don’t sleep” on this opportunity. Take it all the way and make it work for you.
    O!

  16. Tammie Says:

    To Derrick, THANKS:
I agree with Amma O. who said it was divine intervention that you were chosen for the interview to give you the platform to express what so many of us can not. I do disagree with the press who said they picked the “wrong” person to be interviewed. I say the reporter picked the “right” person, for I believe God placed you at the ‘right’ time and at the ‘right’ place to say the ‘right’ things to the ‘right’ questions, Thanks for being an available vessel. Thanks for being “the voice” for those of us (Blacks) who are not informed, or apathetic with the whole political system, and those of us who suffered for the right-but never got the chance to vote, and for our future generations who have not yet had the chance to vote, etc. —-Thanks for “taking back the mic” Thanks for not “sleeping” Yes, you can run for a political office, but I rather see philanthropists fund your movement with some type of fellowship. Have you ever entertained that idea? …This is where I believe you can have the freedom/platform for your passion in making a difference now and for our future. I pray that the ‘good hand of God’ be upon you. I look forward to seeing what God does with you. Thanks for being available at a time like this! I will share this video with everyone on my
    e-address book!-Again I say THANKS!

  17. Donna Says:

Derrick, the articulation of your opinions, personal experiences, high level emotional support for Senator Obama will indeed have a powerful and positive impact on each and every voter that is engaged in our 21st Century political and social movement.
It is my prayer that your second presentation makes it in a big way throughout all media channels so those that are unaware of Senator Obama’s purpose, will gain a true understanding of how we as a people call all come together for the greater good…and I believe deep down in the depths of my soul that…YES WE CAN!!!! It is certainly and most definitely TIME!

  19. Debora Says:

    Kudos Derrick,

Well said………………I am lost for words. Thank you for verbalizing my thoughts.

I will be seeing you in the near future running for a political spot. You did the damn thing brother. Your first interview was predestine to arrive to this very point.

    Peace

  20. Constance Says:

Derrick, You have done something to and for me that I could never think would happen. I will be 48 yrs young this year and for as the past, I would say 15-20 yrs not very proud to be an American because of this ‘government’ (beautiful country though). I have always wanted to move to another country. However after viewing your second video, you have made me proud.

YES WE CAN!!!!!!!! Respectfull, Always and Obama supporter, Constance

  21. Tia Says:

We speak dreams into the universe in prayer and supplication in hopes that Someone will hear us and help. And, though, you couldn’t have known then the impact that interview would have on people around the world, I guarantee you that people are listening.
As an inner-city educator, I have encouraged my faculty to show and discuss your interview and YouTube blog in their social studies classes. I think it has become increasingly important for young, voting age African-Americans to be well informed and make a decision not solely based on common interests but unique/innovative approaches a candidate endorses to achieve the goals of his/her platform. Your interview describes the difference brilliantly.
As a young person, I’m inspired by your political acitivism and emotional appreciation of civil liberties typically taken for granted. I appreciate the message and will pass it on.
    As a woman, I’m awestruck.
Best of luck to you in all of your endeavors - political, musical and otherwise.

  22. Aida Emanuels Says:

It was an honor to have the opportunity to listen to you speak.
I am an immmigrant and an american and I am proud to be a supporter of the truth, Obama. Unless you have gone through the trials of not having opportunities it’s really hard to recognize the truth.

    God bless you!!

  23. TK Says:

WOW!!!! Well said indeed. I sent the two videos to everyone in my address book! Derrick you made me proud to be Black, African, and American!!! Thank you for sharing your story and for eloquently expressing what so many Americans take for granted. Keep up the GREAT WORK. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!! I’m Speechless…

  24. Trish McConnell Says:

Well said. Thank you for articulating your thoughts, hopes & yes, emotions. You are a shinning example of the promise of the youth of this country. I will share these videos in hopes that your message will empower others. I agree…yes, we can.

  25. Linda L. Smith Says: Says:

God Bless you Derrick, and Thank you for sharing your heart with America!. I will pass these videos on to not just young people but Adults as well, Yes You Can!!!!
you are an example of what HOPE is! also There is hope in Jesus!

  26. Carol Says:

You have a future in whatever you want to do in this world. You are fantastic, and lastly, God knows where to place us and when to place us. Look at all the wonderful feedback you received. Hopefully, someone will view this video and something in it will cause them to take a stand.

  27. Kendra Says:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…I too was blown away by the powerful words conveyed.

WOW!!! WHEN Barak is elected, I think he should offer you a job as his right hand man…that would be a beautiful thing to see!!

    GOD BLESS YOU, MY BROTHA.

  28. Ruby Sullivan Wilson Says:

So well spoken. I am proud to be an American and able to vote for Barack Obama.
I grew up in the south and remember when Blacks could not vote. My family and community fought for the right to vote. I thank my 90 year old mother for instilling in her five daughters the importance of every single vote. My mother voted for Obama in the South Carolina primary and will vote for him in November.
God bless you for your profound words. Let us do it!

  29. Pastor Sharon from Brooklyn Says:

AWESOME! You make me proud as a Black Mother and a Black Woman! Thank You for sharing your heart. And you stay Blessd! I’ll pray for you!

  30. Marilyn Says:

You are suchh an outstanding young man. You have made me proud so I can only image how your mama feel. I agree with her about the gum but it actually made you more real. Hugs to you and YES WE CAN!

  31. Britt Says:

    Derrick,
I’m impressed, inspired, and truly moved by your passion, elegance, and commitment to the great freedom and political clout we enjoy and so often squander in this country. I support Senator Obama for the reasons you articulated and more, but knowing that he is arousing gifted young people like you to dream great dreams, to believe in yourselves and our country’s potential, togo forward — well, that’s a special and compelling additional reason to vote for him. You make me proud!

That’s what i’m talking about…truth speaks…and its something we all should feel…i cant talk about noone, i’m not into politics as much as i should be, coming from a small town/country side…but I VOTE…and his passion is what we all should have…true statement…alot feel why should we vote, when we arent going to achieve or advance…but its also upon you as an individual to make a change in your life..the freedom is here to do so…It may be a few holdbacks..but its possible!! THANKS DNA(IT FITS) …TAKE ADVANTAGE..YES WE CAN!

  34. pastor Derrick Ford Says:

Hello Derrick, your interview was sent to me by one of the members of my congregation. I am a registered independent, and I have taken an interest in Barak Obama as well. Even though I disagree with his political position on a women’s right to choose, I will not argue his position, because personally he does not believe in taken the life of an unborn child. But I deeply appreciate your position and how you articulate it. I believe that Barak is on to something with his point of CHANGE, and his belief that YES WE CAN. Many people do not understand what he means by yes we can, and they say he doesn’t have substance, but they fail to realize is that no one who has never been a president have the experience to be a president, so when people say he doesn’t have the experience, I believe that they are mis informed. I believe as you do that Barak will have the political will to make the changes necessary to make us country that will work together. As you, I am concerned that Hillary is too partisan, and her hatred of George W, and the Republicans, will only serve to divide the house and senate further apart. So, I solute you my friend, appreciate someone with my name driving home the very points that I drive home with my colleagues, and members of my congregation. This election is bigger than our agendas, our personal goals. It’s about bringing together people with broken hearts to realize that hope is on the horizon, and if ask whether we can do this as a people, my response is YES WE CAN! God bless, and keep on bringing light to a dark political situation.

  35. KirkM Says:

    Derrick, thank you.

You have no idea what your words and your emotion and strength have done for so many cynical American voters, such as myself. I am almost 50 years of age, and I have lost so much faith and confidence in our electoral system, that I can’t even begin to put it into words.

I’m an Independent, and have watched this race with interest. I have seen the typical hot air about who will do this and who will do that and yadda, yadda, yadda. I have watched all the candidates promise the world, like we get every election.

And I have watched Obama’s speeches. And I have watched Hillary’s and McCain’s speeches. And I have watched Obama’s speeches again. And I see something unusual.

I’ve seen friends and people that I know, and people that I have talked with….people of many different backgrounds and makeups and opinions agree…..with Obama….and his platform.

Of course, I am still skeptical, as I always am about the political process.

And then I see your video. First your interview, and I think, wow….now there’s a kid with his head screwed on straight….this country might actually have some hope with young people like this coming up and asking for the right kind of change.

And then I see your response video, and I am absolutely reduced to tears.
You have no idea what your kind of passion and desire and intellect means to this country. To have even ONE person that displays what you have dipslayed in your video renews my hope and faith that this country might actually be able to turn things around. You have restored SO MUCH in my lost cynical attitude in this country.

I am going to forward this and your original interview to all that I know…..I truly believe that it is something that is a must see for those that have lost faith in our once great country.

Thank you so much for what you have given to the truly lost ones out there.

I find myself becoming more and more of an Obama supporter every day.

    Peace, and be well!!!!

  36. NDJ Says:

This is incredible, that I just finished responding to the undecided Superdelegates - for my mother-(before seeing this) who is 65, African-American, civil rights survivor,- teacher, believer, holder of the American dream, and dreamer of the American hope. She like I, long for belief in the political system and its players, and know there are strength in numbers. She like I, know education is taken and never given to you, just like wisdom, insight and opportunity. Barack, is not asking like the other candidates to believe in him, but to believe in themselves. All the other candidates are challenging him on solutions to issues that they helped to create. This movement, this candidate is needed for ours and the next generation.

  37. Ishmael Says:

” I dont need anybody to tell me who I am” As an emcee, and an individual, those words came as a huge statement. Also, probably addresses the biggest problem with our youth today, especially minorities. Go ahead brutha, I can dig it!

  38. Carl Says:

Derrick, As a former fellow resident of Flatbush, I think you are fantastic! Everything I could say has already been articulated by the previous posters. However, let me say this; if President Obama would have a cabinet position of Dept. of Youth Affairs, you’d surely be the Secretary of Youth Affairs.

Much love to you and continued success in all your endeavours.

    Peace and Blessings.

    Carl

  41. Leon Lewis Says:

Yes we need a change for the better.I believe you are the man period for thepresidency. You are the man.

  42. Echelle Harris Says:

    Bravo Derrick…..

  43. Ralph N. Says:

After hearing Derrick, my cousin in his positive mind-set, it is so refreshing to see that he has grown up to be a radiant and bright man with so much to offer to the world! I sincerely hope and I pray that he will pass his energy to the Nations ultimate effort: unity!

  44. ElsieP Says:

    Derrick,

You are a true inspiration to what it means to be free and truely appreciate it. I’ve never really been inspired by politics nor have I been too interested in it (although I do vote). You’re video has given me something to think about and I hope that it has given others the same. Not just in this upcoming elections but in future elections as well. Thank you for making me (and hopefully others) think about the importance in the political process where I would otherwise not think about.

Much love to you and “Don’t Sleep”!!!

  45. Kathy Says:

It is so refreshing to see our young people motivated, knowledgable, and engaged in this election. They are our future. It makes me hopeful about my grandchildren’s future. YES WE CAN!

  46. Carolyn P. Says:

You’re right, Derrick. YES WE CAN! Thanks for giving voice to the feelings of many of us. We are a great country, and we can achieve great things TOGETHER. I hope you’ll give thought to entering politics yourself someday. Your passion for the greater good is a wonderful thing.

  47. Walt Kindred Says:

    This is great!

  48. Michelle Says:

wow…i told co-worker..that for the first time since being in America from the age of 11 I finally feel like an American. Barack Obama makes me feel like an American..as for me a foreigner naturalized in the United States..this is a beautiful thing..and I am so glad I am not the only one who feels that way

  49. Sharon L. Graine Says:

Outstanding. It is a pleasure to see someone young, excited, and involved. It is one of the most exciting times in American history. The fact that two people are running that which ever of them win will make history. It is a time when we all can become apart of that history by taking part and letting our voices be heard. The young man in the video represents many of our young minds that are never heard or acknowledged but do exist. I thank him for his interest and the interest he has sturred.

  50. Phyll Says:

Now THIS is what I am talking about!!! I am not surprised that this young man was so well spoken. Just overlooked by mainstream America. I applaud this young man who speaks so eloquently and passionately with his facts straight. I was asked if I was supporting Mr. Obama because he is a Black Man. I promptly responded that he is the best candidate that speaks about issues as an American, and what’s good for the ENTIRE country as a whole. He is a man who happens to be Black(which I am so very proud of that fact) More so, he speaks what my issues are; the issues of the common people. not the large corporations, but the country as a whole.

My hats and a courtsey off to Derrick. You go young brotha!!! Speak, speak…..and to the mass stream…..there are more “Derricks” all around you just take the time and listen. In a borrowed line from Derrick…..’DON’T SLEEP’.

  51. csh Says:

Blessings to you!!! I love the interview and I love this post. You are killing it. I am inspirted to do more. Thank you, Derrick.
    csh

  52. Safiya Says:

Derrick, you are so fine! are you single? I think we’d have a lot in common… ;o)

  53. Pat Says:

Amen! What an inspiring, motivating response! Derrick, I am not an immigrant but I can relate completely to your perspective and appreciation for the right to vote. I am old enough to remember when Blacks in the south were not allowed to vote and Civil Rights workers gave their lives to ensure that every American was allowed to exercise their right to vote. I consider it not only my right but my duty to be involved in the political process.

  54. Wendy Says:

As a 54 yo black woman, I am ashamed that I have never been interested in the way our country has been run until we hit rock bottom. This young man has brought me to my knees with thanks for not only the right to vote, but for being a citizen of the greatest nation in the world. We have left others to do as they pleased for far too long and we are now paying for that complicity. It is time for a change and Obama can be the start of that change. Thank you Derrick, from the bottom of my heart.

  55. Troy Says:

    Very well said, Derrick!!!

I read in one of the posts from your initial video that you were a ‘97 graduate of Harvard, which presumably would make you roughly 30, 31yo.
I have a younger brother your age. He too is a very articulate and well-spoken man, but has never taken a real interest in the political process. On the heels of the deteriorating state of the economy under the direction of our current president, he and his peers felt compelled to mobilize against that movement during our last general election. The activism displayed by the “Hip-Hop Generation” (of which I am a card carrying member) was laudable. However, the movement was derailed and in most young black people’s opinion an election was stolen. Needless to say, my brother and his friends felt disenfranchised and I feared they would join millions of impressionable youth in returning to the normal state of apathy as it pertains to politics.
“Why vote? It wont matter anyway.” was a frequent refrain from most.
I type all of this to say that I was extremely worried about our future, not just as African-Americans in this country, but as citizens. If there was an overwhelming apathetic and lethargic approach to policy and procedure, then the ‘powers-that-be’ will maintain their control and do with us as they please.

Along came Barack Obama and his message of hope, which has inspired millions. It has given new legs to the younger, distant or less-informed observer and allowed many people a window to political and policy education.

What is inspiring here is that you are the face of that generation. I have gladly been proven wrong and am excited to know that there are hundreds of thousands of ‘Derricks’ and ‘Donnas’ who are engaged.

Lastly, your most important message is one that has been drilled into our heads throughout our school years and especially during this month….our right/privilege of voting.

I often wonder if the struggles of our ancestors resonate with the youth of today or if they take on a near mythological tone as the same messages and stories are repeated each Black History Month.
Obvoiusly, Derrick, you don’t take that privilege for granted and not only are you exercising that right, but I suspect that not just you, but countless others, are truly vested in EVERYTHING that it represents. Don’t stop.

I have a 4yo daughter and a 2yo son and I hope to instill in them the surface qualities you appear to possess.

    Believe….

  56. P.W.W.II Says:

Derrick is the voice of all young Americans, of all races, and all genders. Your words have made a change in my mind and heart. I now know what Obama truly represents. Thank you Derrek, for awaking the eyes of the young, and the lost. God bless.

  57. RTILLERY (T.O) Says:

You just changed my mind about this election. I didnt want to get caught on the bandwagon but I thank GOD I was able to hear you. K.I.M

  58. shirley in Atlanta Says:

Thank you Derrick, you have made an awesome statement in support of Obama. I am a long time supporter and probably could not match your abilty to express how important it is that we are engaged in bringing about the change that Barack says WE can bring! I believe it and I can hardly wait for Janauary 2009. I will be there to witness this great event. It will be in the year of my 60th birthday and what a present it will be.

  59. Teresa T. (Houston, TX) Says:

To sum up my thoughts on this young man all I can say is “BRAVO”!!!!

  60. julie Says:

I am a middle aged woman whom you have inpsired and have given hope that the next generation of leaders, your generation, will effect the changes our country needs; the changes my generation failed to even identify, much less act upon. I am a Barack supporter, but very cynical about anything and everything political. You mentioned how the right to vote was a blessing and that really made an impression on me. How easy it is to take for granted the blessing of this great country and its democracy. You are also so right–this is about having a black man or white woman as president–this, as in any election is about making the changes needed so that all of Americans can benefit. thank you derrick. Having 3 kids of my own, I KNOW you have made your mom proud.

  61. Barbara P Says:

What amazes me more is that we continue to be blown away by our own representation of intellect. We are an intellectual race, this should not be a surprise to us, it is not to me, because I refuse to let the media convince me otherwise.

This brother is on point, as he should be, You have been reminded, “don’t sleep”.

  62. Gena G Says:

“The Revolution will not be televised”! You are now “in the driver’s seat”!

  63. h2Bn Says:

A wonderful statement for Barack Obama and a promising indication of the sense Derrick’s generation can yet make of the mess it’s being handed.

    “Take Back the Mike” indeed!

  64. RICK Says:

DERRICK , YOU HAVE IMPRESSED ME FROM THE VERY FIRST INTERVIEW AND
HAVE MADE ME VERY VERY PROUD OF THE AFFECT YOUNG PEOPLE CAN HAVE ON THIS COUNTRY..I SINCERELY HOPE BARACK HAS SEEM THIS AND UNDERSTANDS THE IMMENSE IMPACT HE IS HAVING ON THIS COUNTRY..

GO FURTHER WITH THIS DERRICK…YOU CAN BE THE OTHER PIECE OF THE PUZZLE FOR CHANGE!!!!!!!

  65. pya from atlanta Says:

I loved both of the links that was emailed to you…such power…I voting for you for president…keep the spirit…you are truly beautiful

  66. ro Says:

Derrick, I am moved by your message. It is great to see and hear your enthusiasm expressed for Barack Obama. I definitely agree that it is time for us to “Take Back the Mike”. Barack Obama represent a “rebirth” of the government of the people, for the people and by the people. I pray that your message resounds to every American citizen to come on board for this refreshing ride to Change.

    Well done Derrick, great job!

  67. Queenb Says:

Derrick, there is a calling on your life . The door flew open when the guy interviewed you, probably thinking, he was going to trick you up and make you fumble. He did not relize how God was using him to open a new door for you. Walk through to door,, and don’t be afraid, “The almighty is with you”!

  68. Priscilla H - Detroit Says:

    WOW Derrick,

Your responses were a cool, refreshing, exilirating drink of joy…. I bet you were the interviewer’s greatest experience ever; surely you will linger in his memory for a long time - I am sure. I will certainly be on the “look out” for you, Derrick; all expressways are awaiting your entrance - - to the world?

  69. Randy Says:

Derrick has explained to me, a member of the Afro-centric generation the reasons why Obama is so right for our times. Young people get it better than most of us even though we also support Obama. Derrick said anumber of things to the abrasive reporter, but his personal response was ever more insightful.

In his own words Derrick is not just “willing “he is also “able”. The good news is there are thousands of Derricks out there. My son Dedan is one of them. They like, Obama, are the future, and we should all be grateful.

  71. Genevia Says:

I am saddened by the fact that some in the public would not expect this gentleman to be articulate and well educated.

I have very high expectations for our young people and currently serve on a committee that works with young accounting scholars so I see bright, energetic youth of color often.

The only way that we will improve this country is to raise the expectations for our youth and encourage and promote young men like Derrick (because he is our future).

Keep up the good work Derrick, you make us very proud!

  72. Rick Says:

This is why *I* am supporting Obama. It’s not about how articulate Derrick is - he already said, he’s a performer, a public speaker - it’s not about his youth (if he voted in 2000, he must be older than he looks) - it is about his message. Obama represents HOPE, the hope that this country, which is in such a sad state right now, can change. Hillary does not inspire this hope the way that Obama does. I also don’t think that Hillary believes in this hope, or wishes for change in the way that Obama does. Derrick, thank you for articulating what this campaign is about.

  73. Carli Says:

I was very touched by your words…I have two adult sons which one voted and the other I had to make vote…I sent this site to My son and he said thnaks Mom…So I have to say thank you Derrick. I’m proud of your parents tell them “JOB WELL DONE”

You keep doing what your doing People “TAKE BACK THE MIC”

    Carli

  74. yolande selman Says:

Jomo Kenyatta, Barack Obama, Derrick Ashong make me want to know more about this obviously interesting place called Kenya !

  75. Warren Haskins Says:

    Derrick;

Your initial interview was superb and the responses it engendered was inspiring, yet your response to the interview was much more enlightening to my soul. Sometimes life presents moments that are absolutely perfect when viewed in retrospect. You created a catalyst that will persist throughout this campaign.

One of the most penetrating axioms of your involvement, in this moment, is your conviction that Barack Obama is more than race, gender, party, have & have-nots; it is about ‘people involvement in the process’ and changing the status-quo and moving toward a United States of America for All… From my viewpoint, I trust the sentiment issued by Ophra Winfree referring to Barack Obama as “He Is The One”. The right moment is now, not ten years from now, not someone else, not another generation, but us, grasping the lever today and pulling it to register my vote for the Right Candidate for the Right Moment for the Right Movement - Yes We Can and NOW.

Thanks for expressing your sentiments, sharing your intellect and revealing your parents’ nurturing and most importantly giving me more inspiration. Blessings for your future and hoping to hear many more positive things happening for you as a result of your world media exposure. Your graciousness extended to ‘Mike’ the interviewer, evidences your spiritual understanding of opposite forces coming together for good when faith is to be exhibited and shown to the world. Congratulations good brother and I thank Ray Harris for having shared your story.

    Warren Haskins - New Jersey

  76. Shari Daniel Says:

    Derrick,
As an immigrant myself, i understand where you are coming from and i hope this can be posted all over because for those who have the freedom to vote, now is the time to use it. You have made a difference and your message i am sure has changed a lot of people’s opinions. I support you and i thank you for sharing your voice.
    Best Wishes
    Shari Daniel

  77. AFADI Says:

BY THE WAY, THE COUNTRY IS GHANA!

  78. YOLANDA E Says:

    Derrick,

Bravo, Bravo!!! Take a bow, Derrick!
You have spoken words so many of us needed to hear. You are so refreshing so well spoken and definitely passionate about “Taking back the Mic”! I have served the country Armed Forces for more than 2 decades. I concur, this country needs Senator Obama. His approach for Hope is inspiring; more importantly your chosen words about him, our need to vote, and his compassion resonate deep that change is NOW! Continue to press forward to your dreams and HOPE. Thank you for both of your views on OBAMA!!! “YES WE CAN” I am definitely for OBAMA!

  79. Sandra Says:

    Derrick,

You have made not only your parents proud, but I am proud to know that you are representing your generation and African American people in such a positive light. Senator Obama has brought together so many people of diversity and I believe in him and his speech “We Need Change”. Let’s not go backwards, let’s keeping moving forward.

Thank you, Derrick, for your time and energy.

Keep up the good work, your generation needs a leader like you.

  80. Michelle S. Says:

Wonderful!! DNA, you are standing in front of a mighty big door……..walk on in! You have something special and it’s powerfully needed. You have taken back the mike. Keep it going!!

  81. nomadik Says:

  82. Ashley Says:

This was wonderful! I’m inspired to do jump on board and take back the mic! I believe this is our time and I will not be one who will sit down on this opportunity. I am 25 years old and I am ready to take a stand!

  83. Teresa Says:

Wow! You are amazing and I agree with your Mother lose the gum!

  84. Bill Says:

It occurred to me that Obama’s (is that Irish?) team pulled a coup when they planted this man to talk on widely listened to media. All I have to say is, drop Obama from the #1 position and put Derrick up as a contender!

  85. Alan Says:

It was amazing to see how well Derrick responded to the questioning by the interviewer without stubbling over his words. He took the time to articulate his thoughts/opinions holding back his true emotions about voting in this country and being included in the American Dream! Yes, we can take back the mic.

  86. Sylvia Says:

As a senior female African American, I say thank you Derrick for sharing the love. I hope that your inspirational thoughts and positive words will give other young adults the confidence to stand tall and learn the platforms. We need to vote and to vote for the best candidate. Fortunately, I also feel that is Obama.

  87. Muriel Leonard Says:

    Wow.

  88. Samuel Says:

Ghana’s First President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in the February 1966 Coup. Not 1964. The current Democratic Constitution of Ghana was established in 1992, hence the current democracy and voting rights dates back to 1992. Not 2000. Thank you.

  89. Samuel Says:

  90. kaykitty Says:

Again I say Go on Derick! You have an anointed spirit brother. I am so blessed to have seen this video, at this very point and time. Keep on doing ya thang. You have inspired me, and I’m sure many others who have seen this. You are truly blessed by GOD! You are in my prayers.

    Be Blessed!

  91. Gina Says:

Why should we be so surprised that a young black man is so articulate and informed? It is refreshing and I wish that more young men would take the same road.

  92. Jay Williams Says:

Derrick……… You make us all proud……! You’ll make itin anything that you wana make happen…..!

  93. Regina Says:

You make me proud to be an American! And an Obama supporter. :)
Thanks for speaking for so many of us! You have a remarkable gift.

  94. Jack Reeves Says:

This is truly an amazing time in American, if not World, history. I’m just glad to be able to take part in it and be able to tell my daughter about it in the future.

Derrick, it doesn’t happen very often anymore.. but I’ve been moved.

  95. Angelica Says:

Thank you, Derrick, for opening up your heart like that. I feel you on so many of these points as another Obama supporter who likes to speak her head and heart.

    We will.

  96. K2 Says:

Excellent Derrick; what an articulate explosion of passionate thought. I watched the original interview and wondered a few things and you cleared them up concretely - and gave so much more. You are a terrific example of how immigrant culture makes this country great. You have elevated the playing field in this discourse and given voice to many unable or unsure of how to share their own thoughts. You have made some of us pause and think about the things we take for granted.

I will forward this to my teenage boys and ask that they forward the link to all of their friends.

I will continue my 24/7 volunteer work on behalf of the Change so many of us see as absolutely necessary.

Please consider asking someone to put Spanish subtitles on a version of this and put out again.

    Go Obama ‘08…Feel the Change

Beautiful! Yes We Can - Don’t Sleep!

  98. Anonymous Says:

Beautifully said. You have a very bright present AND future. You inspire me to do better with being more aware. Thank you.

  99. Peace Says:

    Derrick,

I agree with all the others!!!!!!!!!!!! You are an absolutely awesome young black man that I feel very proud of. I know your parents do! Keep focusing on being heard! A change is coming!

  100. Heezy Says:

DON’T SLEEP!! EXCELLENT..somebody snap this young man up..

TAKE BACK THE MIC…I LOVE IT

  101. Gogo Michelle of Washington, DC Says:

Thank you brother for telling that reporter your well spoken intelligent thoughts. The reporter kept coming at you with fire crackers and you responded with atomic bombs. Blacks, as you are already aware, can easily be underestimated due to the common stereotypes that have been placed. You, my friend, have shown that the black community is a great community to be a part of despite the shortfalls that are experienced. Keep up the good work and I appreciate you. Welcome to the U.S. and keep up the good work……… :)

  102. Will in Lawrenceville Says:

Thanks Derrick. You have restored my faith in our young people. The fact that you express yourself so well is truly a testament to the geat jod your parents have done in raising you.

  103. Michelle from Houston Says:

For you individuals who chose to pay more attention to the dates and names Derek mentioned clearly have missed the mark. Focus on the message people–in its entirety. Don’t discount leadership and hope because you found such trivial flaws. When are we as individuals, whatever our ethnicity, going to learn to stop “hating” and start congratulating and participating. And yes, I said hating, because that’s what it is. Get a life. Pick an issue apart like you did Derek’s response and maybe then we could turn the American dream into a reality, like the young man spoke of.

  104. PATRICIA SIMKINS, DC Says:

I am so proud of this young man and how strongly and without hesitation he voices his opinions — YES WE CAN if we have more like this coming up behind us!

  105. Monique from Detroit Says:

That’s what I am talking about!!! I am in the field of education, and for as long as I can remember I have stressed to my students and my son how important it is to take an active role in the voting process. I will be using this video as a teaching instrument in my class for years to come. I applaud your knowledge and awareness of what the voting process means to us as Americans. I teach in an urban area, and I have always told my students that they should vote, because it is a priveledge that others have given their lives for us to be able to have!!! You brought so much more to that for me. I have no doubt that this video will change and/or ignite political awareness nationally. Keep doing what you are doing, and I will proudly do my part.

  106. Tammy Fleming Says:

I was very proud of what you said. You answered the interviewer’s questions well and I dont think you have to explain yourself any further. I like the fact that they probably didnt expect you to answer the question as well as you did with the chewing of the gum, backpack, baseball hat and all. Don’t further explain yourself. You did us proud. I hope Obama sees it.

  107. s.e.scott Says:

    God Bless You. WOW!

  108. Martin Says:

my brother you have put it down in such a way that just leaves me speechless. You voiced exactly how i feel about Obama and succinctly said why i am for him over my old boss John McCain.

Keep on doing what you do.

You are amazing and truly a gifted brother.

  109. CherylJ Says:

WOW; All I can say is SNAP, SNAP, SNAP!!! You speak for us all…

  110. Michelle D Says:

WOW, IS ALL I CAN SAY.

  111. chanel Says:

go my brother nothing like an educated black man and wait a nice looking one…

  112. Juanita Says:

I vote for YOU. You are an awesome speaker and should do more of it. You are a blessing!

  113. Leon Johnson Says:

I couldn’t have said it better.

  114. Ruby Says:

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to hear this young man introduce Obama somewhere? hmmmmmmmm Also I hope his music is ready to roll because I would love to hear it and it is about time we had self determined music movement about something important. Along with supporting Obama we need to support Derek and young men and women like him. His parents should be very proud.

  115. Kim W Says:

What an amazing speech my brother! I just stared at the screen when you finished with tears in my eyes. Obama needs to consider bringing you to the White House with him! I pray many will see your speech and get the full understanding it is time for a change. I would also like to thank you for being such a roll model to our young African Americans and giving them the understanding how imortant it is they use their God given rights to get out and vote.
    Thank you and God bless.

  116. Raeonda Says:

    Derrick,
I just turned 18 and am a first time voter. This video has helped me see the beauty in the democratic system- change. It has also challenged me to value my privilege to vote, realize who/what I’m voting for, and to stand firm on my beliefs. I vow never to cast a vote for a candidate based on popularity, but based on the real issues. I am proud to say that I live in a country where people like you value the general well being. The real beauty is not revealed in one single candidate’s ability to reform, but by the millions of voters who realize that they must first be the change.
    -Raeonda

  117. Dee Says:

WoW!!!!!!! What a wonderful testiment to the true meaning of democracy!! Derrick reminds us why the U.S. Constitution was written… “We the people of the United States” have rights!! And the people of the United States have been exercising their rights and stepped out of their comfort zone and voted for the right man to lead us, Barack Obama!!! President Obama!!!

Thank you Derrick and thank you for reminding us why we need to care!!!

  118. R.P Says:

Mr. Ashong you are very gifted young man I, was really moved by you oratory do not be surprised if the Obama campaign used you, you are I think exactly what the campaign needs to promote HOPE! And YES WE CAN…….

  119. ms. marty cole Says:

MY BROTHER DERRICK ALL I HAVE TO TELL YOU IS I FEEL YOUR LOVE FROM YOUR SOUL!!! LISTENING TO YOU BROUGHT JOY TO MY HEART TO KNOW THAT BROTHERS LIKE YOU CAN FEEL THE LOVE..AND YES A CHANGE IS COMING!
    THANK YOU FOR SHARING
GO OBAMA WITH THE GRACE, LOVE, PROTECTION AND GUIDENCE FROM OUR FATHER GOD UP ABOVE IN JESUS NAME!!!
    AMEN-AMEN
“hey derrick…YOU are the man” :)

  120. donald linder Says:

Bro Derrick you are right on POINT, we need more young men like YOU!!

  121. Lee Augustine Says:

Great job Derrick. I am a Hillary supporter and for several reasons. One of them though is an emotional one similar to Derricks. I come from the baby boomer generation. We had a song (by Chicago) that I believed “We Can Change the World”. Now we tried real hard & although we failed to a large extent we had some successes. With the only boomer presidents we have had - Clinton, imperfect to be sure, whose flaws were used to hamstring him (but not a bad President) & Bush - a complete disaster & contratry to all “our” ideals, we need another chance. May be that falls right into the Obama folowers desire for change from the Clintonian past, but it comes from the heart. We truely want to “Change the World” too.

  122. lllllllllllllll Says:

    I LOVE it!!!! lol

This interviewer thought he chose a young black who was out there voting for Obama based on race without any knowledge of how Mr. Obama was going to handle the issues. I am so glad this young man proved him wrong and let him know that young black kids are intelligent and up on the problems that concern this nation!

    Great job, Derrick!

  123. donald linder Says:

Bro Derrick you are right on POINT, stay on point, we need more young men JUST
    LIKE YOU!!!

  124. K. Jones Says:

    WOW! Thank you.

  125. tal Says:

you are a good example of the future

  126. Eyes412 Says:

    Thank you Derrick!!!!!

  127. Belinda Says:

This was great and very eloquent!!!

How can I get you as a speaker and perhaps your band to speak to a group of African-American children at a statewide meeting (in Florida) regarding the importance of politics and how it affects their young lives?

  128. Chad Lupkes Says:

I don’t know what city Derrick lives in, but I really want to know. I want to know more about “Soul Fest” and his “Take Back the Mike” initiative. Google ain’t helping. Someone send me a link!

  129. Wilma Says:

    Derrick!

I am so PROUD OF YOU!!!! you are articulate in your speech and knowledgeable, keep the fire inside you burning and continue in your DREAMS!!!! I wish you many blessings in all that you do!

  130. Evelyn W-J Says:

I am so proud to be able to say I know you, Derrick. I agree that the reporter definitely picked the wrong person to “mess” with. He was set up. You were set up. God set him up to fail and you to succeed. Thank you for being in the right place at the right time and allowing yourself to be used so mightly!

    Go H-R Kuumbabes!!

  131. Anonymous Says:

Wow, I am in tears, this young man was powerful in his statement, he spoke from his heart. He has made me feel good about being an american, and livining here in America. He is right about, it is not a Black man, nor is it is a White women, it is about bringing American people back together again.

I have not heard the true feeling from anyone in a long time, but Derrick, brings energy, strength, knowledge, compassion, and honesty to his message, if Derrick was running for an office I would vote for him. DERRICK, I KNOW YOUR PARENTS ARE PROUD OF YOU, AND I AM PROUD OF YOU TOO, PLEASE GIVE THIS ENERGY TO OTHER YOUNG MEN. THIS IS WHAT AMERICA NEED TO SEE OUR YOUNG MEN DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE.

    KARON (OKLA.)

    Karon

  132. Jerrie Says:

    Derrick!

All I can say is “PRAISE GOD…PRAISE GOD” you are truly blessed at a time when others tell us the youth are in trouble. ‘ THE DEVIL IS A LIE” I salute you and others like you! Keep knowing who you are and whose you are. All our children see themselves in you. Continue to take a stand and be proud. I am a Democrate, but have voted for the person and not just the man/woman for both local and national levels. OBAMA is our the MAN!!!!!!! (I’ll be looking for your band/music in our area)

  133. Sandra Says:

    Derrick,

I am a 54 year old professional female and I was blown away by your amazing interview and follow-up comments. I must admit that I have viewed many videos on Utube but this is the very first time that I felt moved enough to make comments on the blog. I don’t have the time to read all of the comments at this time however I am of the opinion that if there are any negative feedback there is something wrong with the individual sending it. No matter who an individual is supporting they should have an appreciation for what you said and your ability to express yourself so eloquently. Very powerful message. Thank you.

  134. S.W. Says:

Oh, my god……that was so heartfelt and definitely on target! Scary that it sometimes takes someone not born here to appreciate the liberties we have here, but are “conditioned” not to exercise. Maybe in the future, you should throw your hat in the arena…we could use a breath of fresh air!

  135. CLS Says:

A a fifty-nine y/o refugee of the Sixties movement, I am proud to see that not all young people are focused solely on rap, the latest techno devices and basketball. Derrick you make me proud as a black woman and mother. Keep it up young man! I’m sure we will hear more from you in the future.

  136. V.Y. HAMILTON Says:

    DERRICK,

TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK… YOU ARE BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVORED

THANK YOU DERRICK! MAY THE LORD GOD BLESS YOU REAL GOOD

  137. L. Wasswa Says:

    Oh my gosh,

Derrick you have made me so proud as an American and an African American woman. I wish you all God’s blessings in your endeavor’s.
P.S. You remind me of my son’s!

  138. cdon Says:

This young man just made a grown man cry. I just wish that more young black men would heed Derricks message.
Some asked for a web site for Derricks band/movement. Try this http://www.takebackthemic.com/

  139. Debora Says:

Derrick, thank you for being so well informed making you and our NEXT PREISDENT OF THIS GREAT U.S.A. look so good! Things will get better and maybe those Arabs, etc. can sit down and have a decent talk with us and stop hating us so much. United we stand, MY GODS FAVOR CONTINUE TO SHINE ON YOU!

  141. Felecia Says:

Derrick, you are truly an inspiration!!! Watching both videos gave me goose bumps as well as brought tears to my eyes. You are one blessed brother. I pray for your continued strength. I am so proud of you.

  142. Future Says:

Derick is right. Technology is making this world smaller and smaller and smarter and smarter. Ideas drive change and set different tones from the bottom up. Barrack speaks about globalism. This means free markets. This means the haves and the have not will not be devided by thier ethnic race, but more so thier race to execute thier ideas to set them free in a global economy. Look at this http://www.5linxmedia.com did in thier 1st quarter in 2006 . This is an opportunity for anyone in the world to economically advance themselves by making money. The US, Africa, India, Mexico, China, most of Europe, the Baltics and well over 40 other countries many in a local footprint. Basically You as an individual can build a business that can have you financially free in this new world of change.

  143. Menes Says:

that was very moving to hear your story and how it relates directly cause I am one of those that never voted and never thought it would matter.. Especially after bush got reelected. Nevertheless, belief and hope is something that shapes our reality just as much as fear and disbelief. Stay positive brotha and keep the hope alive.. I’ll be checking for you on my way to vote.

  144. Chris Robinson, Gary, IN Says:

WOW! Derrick, I thank GOD for your wisdom. You make me not want to answer the business phone because I just wanted to listen to your message uninterrupted. You are so right– don’t Sleep and YES we can. I would like to invite you to the City of Gary to speak to our young voters… How Can I get in touch with you?

  145. HAL T Says:

As a 70 year old African American with a long memory I am truly impressed and deeply moved by Derrick. He gives me hope in futur generations of African American men. As the young brotha says…”don’t sleep” and to quote Gil Scott Heron from the 1960’s “the revolution will not be televised”. Get out and participate in the process. Then you truly have a voice indeed.

  147. Marc Says:

    Derrick,
You are a living example that education is and always will be the great equilizer. When you are packed with knowledge no one will be able to deny you. Young America needs to see this video. The way you dealt with that news castor was incredible. The professionalism and knowledgeable insight that you gave caommanded attention and kept him on his seat.
God is going to use you in a mighty way to bring about a change. This was not just about Barrack it was about the type of warriors taht God is raisng up for such a time as this. Change must happen to promote equal growth and oppertunity in this country.

    God Bless!!

  148. Neicy Says:

I have watched your video 2 TIMES…I have never felt so inspired or so moved…I pray Obama’s staff sees both videos…And that we will all soon be blessed, yet again, to see you introducing Obama at the Democratic Convention! You’ve made me re-commit to being the best mother and role model for my two African-American sons…Be assured they will be watching your videos…

    Bless You!

  149. regina t tulsa ok Says:

Wow, this guy is quite amazing. I am a pending, seasoned female and he taught me some things. I have always been a voter but not very political. I want to show this to my grandkids, especially my grandson because our children are not being taught what it should mean to them as black people to vote. How our people struggle to even have the right to vote. This young man knows what it feels like not to have had those rights and now appreciates what he has.

    Thank you.

  150. Tanya McDaniel Says:

    Derrick,
My God, that was an excellent response from an excellent interview.
you are so passionate about the wonderful candidate we have in OBama, that if I wasn’t a supporter I would change. Mike, who taped your interview thought you were a person of color who didn’t have a clue on why you were for Obama.
I’m proud of you my black brother, and God bless…

ps. i agree with your mom on that gum.

  151. Sarah G Says:

DERRICK! You have started a movement! I hope you realize the divine intervention that took place that day. You were meant to be there, and meant to give that interview. May God continue to bless you and use you to make a difference in this world, this place we call our “temporary” home. I look forward to hearing and seeing more of you!!

  152. Sarah G Says:

P.S. DON’T SLEEP!!!!!!! Derricks offical catch phrase.

  153. Yonnie Says:

Incredible! You have voiced your reasons for support and they extend beyond pure rhetoric. Great job!

  154. Breana Bell Says:

Wow. If I hadn’t already been inspired by Barack Obama and his works, you would’ve convinced me. I was just wondering if you were dating anyone because the way you carry yourself is highly attractive. contact Breana at breanabell@yahoo.com

  155. Ashe' Says:

    Alafia Bro. Ashong .
Your intellect and wisdom are truly refreshing - As you “Take-Back-The-Mic” always speak with that Heart Felt clarity and compassion:
    Each One Teach One….
    Each One Reach One….
Stay Rooted - Honor your ancestors - And of course Always listen to Mama!!!
    Hotep

  156. Candi Says:

You are incredible!!! Your parents have to be incredible as well. I love to see a young black man showing that it is possible for us to intelligient!!

  157. Mansour Ansari Says:

Brother man was on da casio like Maceo. How proud I am that a fellow Muslim brother could lay it out. Keep it up.

  158. Sharon Says:

Derrick, you are as inspiring as Barack himself! I am in my 60’s and haven’t been this excited about an election since John Kennedy’s campaign and election. However, this excitement stems from a deeper place in this era than it did then because of people like you. Everything that you articulated speaks to why I also am supporting Obama. People who have historically been apathetic about the political system and process now have something and someone to get excited about in a positive way. We are blessed to be part of such a time as this. God has heard the prayers of His people and has answered. May He bless you in all that you do. (Ever thought about running for office yourself?)

  159. Ley Says:

Man if you were playing Baseball that would be consider a HOMERUN!! in fact I would love to see you oneday run for on some platform which would allow you to Express yourself as ELOQUENTLY as you did, you must admit that he was trying so hard to pin you down but like a Brave soul you embrass him and welcome the attack NEVER letting him know the fight was already over with the intrduction….GOOD Job I love the fact you NEVER base it on Black nor White strickly the issues…….. BRAVO

  160. Joi Says:

See, now this is what I’m talking about! DNA, I can’t get my peers to understand why they should vote in every single election either. My age group (25-40) have always had the right to vote, so they’ve taken it for granted. I always admonish and remind them that if not for themselves, then honor their forefathers, who were beaten, bitten, clubbed, watered down, and intimidated just so they could vote, and subsequently, we could vote. I can not understand why our people choose to ignore significant history. However, thank you for sharing the other side of the voting table, b/c that’s what it’s alllllll about. You are one cool cat! Peace, stay encouraged!

  161. Queen Priscilla Says:

    You are speaking the truth
I tell this to all my people, that we are more than we think of ourself!

If people pay atttention to their potential and their God giving gift, not just spiritual , but in the natural, then they will see thisonce again we are one in Christ, not I, ME or MY but ONE!

    Derrick,

As a divorced mother raising two children; a daughter 11 and a son 10, I can only say that having my children watch you speak is on our to-do list. I want my son to know that growing up he too can be as powerful….and I want my daughter to know that growing up she does not have to settle…there are positive strong black men in this world!!! You encourage me….thank you Derrick.

  164. Linda Says:

Awesom. I would vote for you.

  165. Stevie Robinson Says:

This young man made me see that the right to vote is a privilege that should be cherished by all those who have the opportunity to do so! I’ve never put my trust in man or governments or kingdoms because in my lifetime, I’ve seen nothing but the rich consistently oppressing the poor . And as a black man, it has been hard for me to forget that while all other nations came to this country to enhance their well-being, my people are the only nation of people that were taken and made a commodity to enhance everybody elses well-being! That being the reality of the situation, it has been hard to place hope in a system that was never designed with you in mind in the first place. Thank God for the right and privilege to vote, and I will….But my trust will be in God!

  166. Debbie-Dallas Says:

    Don’t Sleep
    Amen.

  169. Ashley-Cincinnati Says:

As a young voter, I feel like I am one of the few in my age group who feel that active participartion in the political process is an important part of what makes us America. Like you said, Derrick, this is such an exciting time in our nation–and it’s not just about a black man or a white woman… We can not sleep on these opportunity to make our voices heard and take back our nation. Derrick, you have shown the power of being truly educated and not only have you inspired me, but I hope your message continues to inspire others. God put you in the right place at the right time. You are beautiful and I wish you all the best! I’m not going to sleep! Obama ‘08

Like Ashley said, God put you in the right place at the right time. I thank you for saying the words I can’t. God bless you!!!!!!

  171. Jamie Says:

I think that you are correct about why so many don’t vote, but I think there is more to it. I think that people take the right for granted.

I am amazed when I hear that a person who has reached 30 years old has never voted. Sometimes the excuse is because they don’t like the options, but often I hear that it is because they aren’t informed. That, to me, isn’t an excuse. We need to be informed or we will have no one but ourselves to blame for the mess we are in.

Derrick, you are doing wonderful things. You are a well spoken young man who I think has a rare opportunity to make a major difference. I think you should consider speaking at high schools and colleges. Not necessarily about who to vote for, but about being involved and informed.

Thank you for saying it so well!

I am very impressed with Derrick’s message, and the manner in which he articulated, being an immigrant, and now a citizen of the USA, and his positrive attitude in being an American. This is also a testament that immigrants are more than wh
