Jesse Jackson Needs To Blame Media, Not Barack Obama For Neglecting Issues Facing Blacks
Note: This post was originally written November 27, 2007 in response to a comment by Jesse Jackson about the Democrats not talking about issues facing blacks. I’m updating the list a little bit because of some recent interest in it.
Jesse Jackson needs to do his homework before making blanket statements about who is and isn’t speaking out about issues facing African Americans. Just because the media don’t report about what Barack Obama is doing and saying, it doesn’t mean he isn’t talking about it.
Where were the other candidates and why didn’t the top mainstream media give lots of coverage when Obama:
- Stopped Senate Democrats in their tracks when they tried to confirm a man who had screwed minorities over on voting rights?
- Or when he was writing op-eds about injustices in the criminal justice system?
- Or when Obama gave a speech about improving race relations and addressing poverty, but instead, the mainstream media chose to distort his speech to say that he was saying that black people wanted to riot. Why didn’t Jesse come out and have his back on this?
- Or Obama challenging the Indiana Voter ID law because it discriminates against blacks?
- Or when Barack Obama was the first Presidential candidate to begin talking about the Jena 6 controversy and putting out press releases about it? John Edwards and Hillary Clinton didn’t say much about Jena until the news came out about Jackson’s alleged comments about Obama “acting like he’s white.” CNN never reported Obama’s early press releases on Jena, but they put up Edwards’ and Clinton’s statements the day they were released. What’s up with that?
- Or his speech releasing a comprehensive civil rights agenda, especially with regard to equalizing the mandatory minimum drug sentencing laws? Well, I guess not everyone missed that one.
- Or when he secured funding so that low-income minority kids could go to college?
- Or his work to get voting rights for DC residents?
- Or the fact that he wrote the foreword for the National Urban League’s 2007 report, “The State of Black America: Portrait of the Black Male”?
- Or his talk at the National Urban Action Network conference on issues facing urban blacks?
- Or when he went on Tavis Smiley’s show and did a full interview addressing issues of concern to black voters?
- Or that he was the first candidate scheduled to appear at the Essence Music Fest, the largest black event each year and he appeared at the National Association of Black Journalists convention as well?
- Or that Obama has developed one of the most extensive ground-level outreaches to historically black colleges and universities for a Democratic candidate probably since Jesse Jackson’s run for the Presidency?
- Or his work to combat pay discrimination for women and minorities?
- Or his extensive work to help black farmers who had been discriminated against?
- Or his extensive work on Hurricane Katrina, including recently working to test FEMA trailers and speaking out against recent efforts to destroy low-income housing in New Orleans? I appreciate Edwards announcing his candidacy in the Ninth Ward. However, there is no way Edwards’ efforts on Katrina even come remotely close to the work Obama has done.
- Or his efforts to control media consolidation which squeezes out minority media outlets?
- Or did we forget about his July speech releasing an agenda to combat urban poverty?
- Or his efforts to limit challenges to voter eligibility, which disproportionately affects minority voters?
- Or his speech in SC to address education for all the disadvantaged, particularly the gross disparities for black children?
- Or that he has carefully monitored and regularly addressed the Genarlow Wilson case in his stump speech while other candidates haven’t?
- Or his work to combat health disparities?
- Or that he has pressed Bush on his policies towards the Congo, and pleaded with Condoleeza Rice to address the violence inflicted on Congolese women?
- Or his continued push and noted efforts on America’s policy toward Darfur?
- Or his opposition to judges who do not maintain equality and civil rights for all?
- Or his work on subprime loan discrimination which has disproportionately affected minority homeowners?
- Or his work to bring minorities into the global warming/environmental debate?
- Or his work to increase underrepresented minorities and women in the sciences and engineering?
- Or his release of a detailed plan to combat AIDS/HIV in the U.S. and around the globe?
- Or his work to fight teen pregnancy in minority communities?
- Or his efforts to address the Latino dropout rate?
- Or the speech he gave about gun violence in our urban schools?
- Or his attempts to negotiate the situation in Kenya amidst a hectic Democratic primary campaign?
- Or his work on the Civil Rights Act of 2008?
- Or his work to strengthen the hate crimes laws?
- Or when the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education did their own research and called Obama “a superior choice”?
- Or that I haven’t heard any other candidate eloquently relating W.E.B. DuBois to the problems of race in America and around the globe and to our foreign policy and national security?
And there is much much more.
All these actions by Obama have happened over this year’s campaign season, but we’ve hardly heard about any of it in the mainstream media. Instead, they like to report about famous black folk who don’t know this work he has been doing and want to say he isn’t doing anything to address issues facing black people. Shame on the media. Also, the famous black folk with influence need to make sure they have their facts straight before publicly running off at the mouth.
Jackson says John Edwards is the only candidate addressing issues facing blacks. I absolutely disagree. Some of Edwards’ comments, ties, and political gaming throughout the campaign have been retrogressive for minorities and women.
Some black leaders are more concerned these days with winning the rhetorical/grandstanding battle than they are with winning the policy implementation battle. Yes, John Edwards does photo-ops and talks about poverty, but what policy implementation has he enacted that improves the lives of minorities and the poor at either the local, state, or national level? I can’t think of anything. However, I can think of policy accomplishments Obama has had at each of these levels that improve black people’s lives.
And Hillary Clinton? She’s been attempting to disenfranchise voters on her path to winning the nomination. She was working behind-the-scenes slamming Barack Obama’s position on mandatory minimum sentencing disparities as “too liberal.” She was also the only one of the Democratic nominees who did not support retroactivity for sentencing disparities. The Clinton campaign also exploited the problems in black churches for political gain, but had no problem going to black churches for votes themselves.
So I respect Jesse Jackson and all, but he’s flat wrong on this one.
One can never talk about racial disparities too much until the problem is solved, but let there be no doubt that there is one candidate in this race who stands out above the rest in addressing issues over the campaign season that disproportionately face African Americans and that candidate is Barack Obama.

Exactly!
Thank you. I wrote something similar to this as well as sent an e-mail to Jesse Jackson himself. As a Gen X African American, I am so frustrated with the Sharpton’s and Jackson’s running around the country telling America what Black Americans think. They are out of touch with our community and our generation.
Obama 2008!

Great Piece V…..Here’s one I wrote recently…..
Is Al Sharpton Sabotaging Barack Obama’s Campaign ?
Is Black America Letting Him ?
By Greg ‘Peace Song’ Jones
The year is 2007. America is being barraged with racial injustices ranging from the Jena 6 case, hangman nooses everywhere, inner-city education collapsing, economic disparity, health care unavailable for millions, injustice in our legal system resulting in prisons filled with black americans…. just to name a few. I regularly listen to talk radio ranging from Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and Laura Ingraham on the Conservative side. I also listen to black radio including Warren Ballentine and Al Sharpton. I’m thankful that Cathy Hughes has created the opportunity through her powerful Radio One Network to allow the Black American voice to be heard. Black radio has been very instrumental in exposing the injustices to Blacks that are occuring in America and has given black listeners and callers the opportunity to express their feelings of disempowerment.
Al Sharpton is a considered to be a warrior who points out and addresses injustice toward blacks. He is a powerful watchdog and the black community knows that if we’re done wrong in the legal system we can call Rev. Al and he’ll be there. Without him there’s no telling how bad things would be. Because of his voice and ability to address injustice, we blacks have ‘declared’ him to be ‘a’, if not ‘the’ leader of the black community. He, along with others recently led two powerful marches that definitely attracted attention to the cause as well as redeveloping unity among blacks. That is powerful.
BUT….I can not express how much it saddens me to watch Al Sharpton’s lack of support for a presidential candidate who is qualified, credible, highly intelligent, gifted, caring, heavily supported….who happens to be Black. It was recently announced that Barack Obama is leading in the Iowa polls with a 3% lead over Hillary Clinton. That is incredibly historic……a black man leading in the polls in Iowa !!! That means that caring, politically savvy whites feel that Barack Obama is the best choice to run America. Do you know how powerful that is? But does Al Sharpton rally the black community to support Obama? Not at all. Instead, he claims that he is not endorsing anyone ‘yet’, (although the primaries start in less than 40 days) but simultaneously makes inuendo that he is against Obama. Now let’s look at the facts. Al Sharpton has gone before the Congress to state the injustice occuring in black communities. He recently led the march on Washington against the Justice Department. These actions prove that Al Sharpton is aware of the fact that true change in the federal laws are inacted by the President of the United States. From the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voters Rights Act of 1965, the Fair Housing Act of 1968, even the Immancipation Proclamation, all of these federal laws were passed by the President. That’s how it works! So does Al Sharpton think that he can march in Washington and that George Bush will look out the window and say ‘Ohhhh….there’s Al….Hey Dick…we need to do more for black people!’ It will never happen….simple as that. So if you can’t change the mind of the person at the top…..then you change the person at the top.
Rev. Al proves through his march that the power of change rests in Washington D.C. but, for some strange reason, he refuses to support, invigorate or even acknowledge the vital importance of electing a man into the Oval Office who will be responsive to the needs of ALL Americans….of course, including the issues related to Black America. Now, we as black people know that there have been blacks put into powerful positions who have turned their backs on the black community. Condoleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas…just to name a couple. We also know that Barack Obama is no Condoleeza Rice. We know that Barack Obama is highly intelligent, capable, qualified, honest, harmonious, caring of all Americans including blacks (Obama was a civil rights attorney and advocate in Chicago) and an excellent choice to run our country.
But Rev. Al wants to talk about Obama’s lack of experience (although he has the exact same amount of experience that Abe Lincoln had and Lincoln is considered one of the greatest Presidents of all time), not to mention Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson both ran for President with absolutely zero political experience, but never stated that they were far from qualified. Sharpton constantly rants that Obama does not address Black issues which is outright false. Sharpton even spoke negatively about Obama not discussing black issues in a recent debate….not admitting that the questioners never asked any questions regarding black issues. In fact, Obama recently appeared on the Rev. Al radio show and for some reason the Reverend chose not to ask Obama any views on black issues. Interesting. Some so called ‘leaders’ say Obama is not ‘black enough’. Which of the other (white) candidates ARE black enough? And why is Hillary getting so much black support if being ‘black enough’ is so important? That’s just crazy ! To top things off Al Sharpton has openly stated on his radio show that he is not supporting Barack Obama because, as Rev. Al puts it….’ He didn’t support me when I was running !’ (As stated to an Obama supporter who called in on Wednesday, November 21 @ 3:48 eastern) That’s so sad.
Does Al Sharpton want to stagnate the black community intentionally so that he remains the ‘Head Negro In Charge’? The other day I called the Al Sharpton radio show to say how proud I am that Obama is leading in the Iowa polls. At that time, Sharpton’s fill-in host, Mr. Charlie King had a guest on who had been the campaign chairman for Jesse Jackson’s Presidential campaign in South Carolina. (By the way Rev. Jackson claims to support Obama but you’d never know it) Instead of this black man, who Charlie King called a political expert, stating how historic it is that a black man is leading in Iowa for the first time in American history….this man minimized this great achievement by pointing out that Obama is only leading by 3% which is the margin of error for the poll. Then he stated that Obama is inexperienced and even called him immature! I couldn’t believe my ears! He went on to state that Obama should not be supported by blacks because he is of mixed race and an ‘immigrant’ who doesn’t understand that ‘we as black folks are still trying to get our 40 acres and a mule’ ! I was amazed ! So, I picked up the phone and finally got through. The screener asked what I wanted to say. I stated that I wanted to say that the man on the show should be ashamed of himself for being so negative and small minded and that it is extremely sad and counterproductive that black folks like him have such a backwards, self defeative attitude. Al Sharpton’s screener told me….’You don’t REALLY think Barack Obama has a chance to win do you?’ I was amazed !!!! And this, on just the day Obama is all over the news for being ahead of Hillary in the Iowa (white state) polls…..again….an historic achievement. Is this the attitude that Al Sharpton has instilled on his staff ? Are his screeners swaying callers away from supporting Obama ? Wow !
My black Brothers and Sisters. PLEASE LISTEN !!! What we need right now is a change in the White House…..a person who will care about all Americans including Blacks and make the changes necessary. Rev. Al Sharpton knows that the person who becomes President of the United States will play the most pivotal role in the immediate future of Black America. But is it his jealousy, his desire to keep blacks dependent on him, or his lust to stay top man that makes him ‘anti-Barack’?
Rev. Al has the right to vote for whomever he wants. But as the ‘black’ leader is Al’s refusal to support Barack to mean that he feels one of the other candidates would do more for Black America than Obama? If so, then he should speak up telling us who and why he thinks so. Fact is, other than Lincoln, Kennedy and Johnson, no other President has done a thing for blacks in over 200 years. And always remember our so called ‘First black President’ (Clinton) was responsible for implementing the 3 Strikes Law and for making crack cocaine penalties 8 times worse than powder, knowing that these laws would put greater numbers of black men in prisons.
Rev. Al….if you are sabotaging Obama’s campaign…..please stop ! It is time for Black America to stop being misled and rally in support of Barack Obama in record numbers….not just because he is black….but because he is the best person for the job, and will definitely address the issues of Black America. Black folks say America is not ready for a black president which is being proven wrong by the Iowa (white state) polls. The question is…..Is BLACK America ready for a black president, or are we still stuck on the ‘white is right’ mentality which has been to our detriment. Rev. King wrote a book entitled ‘Why We Can’t Wait’. NOW is the time my brothers and sisters.
I’m reminded of the story of the praying christian who is sinking in his boat, cries out Lord Help Me…and going to wait on God. A guy comes up in a row boat, tells the man to get in…but the sinking man says…No….I’m waiting on God. Later, a tug boat pulls up and the man again says No….I’m waiting on God. Now, up to his neck in water, a huge cruise liner pulls up, throws the life jacket to the man and again he states, No I’m waiting on God. Of course he drowns. And when he goes to heaven he asks, Lord…..why did you forsake me? God replies (and these are my words) ‘Fool…..I sent you a row boat, a tug boat and a cruise liner big enough to hold thousands…..but you were too stupid to get on bored…..so you got what you deserved.’
My people, through these times in 2007, when we as Black Americans are drowning in disparity, injustice, poverty and prejudice…..it is time for us to unite, rally together, rise up and get on board the cruise liner that is here to stop us from our drowning……and the name of that ship is ……Barack Obama !
In addition to Why We Can’t Wait, another slogan commonly recited by Rev. Dr. King was….The Time Is Now ! And yes…the time IS now…for us all to get on board. Once we do, we can reach back with outstretched hands to the Rev. Als of this land….
and pull them up….with us.
I’d hate for us to hear….when we meet our Maker….
‘Fools…..you got what you deserved’ .
Let’s Get On Board !

Hope is a powerful aphrodisiac. America is falling for it again. Obama is another political hustler in a long line of snake-oil politicians. Why are Americans so gullible? Why are they so easily conned? Because they’re still hoping for a savior?I watched the beginning of Barack Obama’s victory speech and immediately dropped into deep cynicism.
Surrounded by supporters waving “CHANGE” signs, the Illinois senator went on for what felt like five minutes about how his success in the Iowa caucuses was a vote for “hope” and “change.”
Those are very nice sentiments, but without substance, they’re meaningless advertising slogans, the revolution of Chevrolet and the eternal youth of Mountain Dew.

If the Democrats are stupid enough to select Obama as their candidate for President, we can probably all look forward to 4 more years of the Grand Old Party.

This is a man who has enjoyed the fruits of America at the blood and expense of Black Americans and others, but who has paid virtually no dues.
This is a man whose father had also enjoyed the fruits of university schooling in America but subsequently returned to his native Kenya.
This is a man, who also like his father before him, neither served in a branch of the US military nor in any organization in America opposed to US military adventurism.
This is a man who as a deeply corporate military industrial complex US Presidential candidate, has called for “unilateral” US military actions in other nations. [And why not? After-all, his father, himself, or his wife and children were not and will not be the ones killing and being killed.]
This is a man who, in Chicago, pretended to support the human rights of the Palestinian people but who is now known to be a huge supporter of the apartheid Zionists and their powerful and insidious political lobby in America.
This is a man who dares opportunistically to feign admiration for the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but does not share the collective memory, pain and deep concerns of Black America, other people of color, or even of numerous white Americans for that matter - in the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in this nation.
This is a man who has de facto contempt for the past supreme sacrifices made by thousands of activists from so-called “militant” organizations such the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), the Student National Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party (BPP), Students For A Democratic Society (SDS), the American Indian Movement (AIM), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), etc.
This is a man who is silent about the need for reparations for Black American descendants of slaves and the genocide of the indigenous so-called “Indian” peoples on this continent. He is the consummate opportunist who, in reality, cares nothing about the horrors inflicted upon Black, Brown, and Red peoples in this nation, and has repeatedly signaled that he plans to inflict even more “unilateral” military horrors upon various nations and peoples of the world.
This man, Barack Obama, is but a more articulate, younger, and shinier version of the current and infamous US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, adorning himself dangerously and abundantly in superficiality and double-speak.

Barack Obama is a Clarence Thomas?

btw, it is striking that your first post is basically an argument that john edwards should be the change candidate.
first, he is not even in the race.
second, he hasn’t passed any legislation that has changed the lives of poor people or blacks. what he did do was co-authored the patriot act, co-authored and voted for the iraq war resolution, and voted for no child left behind. he didn’t get any lobbyist reform bills signed into law. and he’s the change candidate?
obama on the other hand has indeed passed legislation to help black and poor people. he’s gotten lobbyist reform bills signed into law. plus, he got out and protested the iraq war. see some of his legislation listed above or on the “Why Obama, Not Clinton?” page on this site.
