John Edwards, you need to sit down. The record and logic shows that both you and Hillary Clinton need to defer to Barack Obama on the issue of leadership on the Iraq War. He was right about not going into Iraq from the start. You and Clinton were not. He accurately predicted the fallout in Iraq after Sadaam Hussein was captured. You and Clinton did not. You didn’t even read the full intelligence report about Sadaam before voting to send our men and women to harm’s way.
John Edwards tried to get nasty at tonight’s Democratic debate and say that Clinton and Obama did not show leadership because while they did vote the right way, they didn’t tell people how they were going to vote before they voted. Gimme a break. This is just grasping for straws to find anything, no matter how crazy it is, to try to take leadership on this issue.
Edwards said: “They went quietly to the floor of the Senate, cast the right vote — but there is a difference between leadership and legislators.”
I have to concur with Obama who responded: “The fact is that I opposed this war from the start…So you’re about 4 1/2 years late on leadership on this issue. And, you know, I think it’s important not to play politics on something that is as critical and as difficult as this…It is not easy to vote for cutting off funding, because the fact is, there are troops on the ground.”
